How to Create a Cottage Style Bedroom

Cottage style is a shabby chic look that reminds me of old bed and breakfasts. Popular among antique and flea market aficionados, the cottage style can transform your bedroom into something of the past. This style can be found at both new furniture stores and vintage stores. Here are some tips for decorating your bedroom with cottage style.

Choose one antique piece

To make it truly cottage style, I would suggest going to antique stores and finding at least one unique piece. It could be as simple as a farmhouse watering can, a distressed headboard or a single chair to be placed in the corner. For instance check out this lovely ivory chair from cottagestyledecoratingguide.com. I love the elegant twists in the backrest and the slightly worn paint around the edges.

Bed as focal Point

Typically, the bed is the focal point in a bedroom. Cottage style beds include iron, shutter. beadboard, upholstered, distressed or a combination of the aforementioned. laylagrayce.com has an extensive selection to choose from. If I’m dreaming, I like the Newport Cottage Cape Bed for $1,240.00 for the queen size. There are many color options for this bed including an optional gold trim.

End of Bed Bench

Add storage and added flair with a bench or double ottoman at the end of your bed. I like the Classic Shabby Chic® Double Storage Ottoman in Jacquard Bisque from target.com for $129.99. I love the texture of this simple fabric ottoman.

Dresser with knobs

Along with a bed frame a dresser is an essential part of a bedroom. Cottage style dressers often have knobs and beading. I like the selection on cottagehomemaine.com. The prices range from $1255.00 to $3015. After choosing your dresser, you can choose a color, finish and knob style.

Side Table

If you have a small bedroom, you might want to forgo the end of the bed bench and get a narrow side table. The distressed white wood carved side table from Furniture Creations is $28.08 on amazon.com. This simple table has one drawer on top and an open bottom. Perfect for some old books or a small lamp.

Inexpensive accents

If you want to add cottage style but cannot afford new furniture then use accents like bedspreads, pictures and lamps to achieve your look. For inexpensive bedspreads, I adore the Shabby Chic line from Target. In fact, most of my curtains and bed covers are from this brand. The line, designed by Rachel Ashwell, features delicate flowers, stripes and other careful details. I like the Simply Shabby Chic® Hydrangea Rose Duvet Set at target.com for about $75.00 for the queen size. Also, try the Simply Shabby Chic™ Resin Candlestick Table Lamp in white for $29.99.

Curtains

Simply Shabby Chic also has a nice array of curtains. Most of them are embroidered, have flowers or eyelet details. I like the Simply Shabby Chic™ White Voile Embroidered Curtain Panel for $19.99. These are long and white with feminine details. They will add softness to the entire room. Each package contains one panel only so remember to buy two. These are at Target and Target.com.

Picture Frames

Picture frames are another inexpensive way to decorate a bedroom. Try the Shabby Elegance picture frames at amazon.com. This white distressed frame is sold by furniture Creations for $4.20 plus shipping.

Tea Set

A quick way to add cottage panache to a bedroom is to add a tea set on a tray. I like the Leaves of Grass tea for two for $44.59 on the englishteastore.com. Or try the Violets Fine Bone China for $65.39. This chine teapot has a beautiful violet pattern on it and would look nice on a tray or simply sitting on top of a dresser.

Prints and Mirrors

Finish off your room with some botanical pictures in distressed frames or with a vintage mirror like this Vintage Ornate Round Wall Mirror from comfortablestyle.com. It retails for $225.00.

A cottage style bedroom will truly make you feel at home.
