How to Clean Leather Stains

Leather is one of the simplest fabrics to clean. Depending on the stain, there are different techniques for leather cleaning. Using an inappropriate application can ultimately damage leather. The following how-to clean leather overview presents three popular stain removal tips. Whether it’s an ink-mark, cat urine or a grease stain, cleaning leather requires the right cleaning solution.

Prior to operation leather cleaning, review the manufacturer’s instructions to determine if there are any warnings or recommended leather cleaning products. Also, always conduct a test of any cleaning compound on an inconspicuous area of the leather, before proceeding to the most visible sections.

How to Clean Leather

Necessary supplies:

  • 1-cup of distilled water (As tap water contains chlorine, distilled water is recommended).
  • 5 drops of liquid hand soap or mild liquid detergent
  • 4-5 clothes
  • Leather conditioner
  • Optional: An all-purpose leather cleaner and conditioner

Basic Leather Cleaning Instructions

1) Using a dry soft cloth, wipe off the leather furniture to remove any dust build up.

2) Mix two-drops of liquid soap into 1 cup of distilled oater. Swish the mixture, until small bubbles formulate.

3) Next, dip the cloth into the soap and water mixture. Thoroughly wring out the rag. (Remember to conduct an application test).

4) Methodically, rub each area, until the entire sofa, chair or table is clean.

5) Use remaining water to dampen another rag, wiping away any residue.

6) Every 12-inches, apply a dime-sized drop of the leather conditioner.

7) Buff leather with a dry cloth.

Optional: Replace the soap mixture with an all-purpose leather cleaner and conditioner. Skip steps 2 and 6.

How to Clean Leather to Remove a Grease Stain

Necessary supplies:

  • 3-clean cotton cloths
  • Leather cleaner and conditioner

1) Take a dry cloth and gently wipe the grease stain in a circular motion.

2) Next, apply a speck of leather cleaner and conditioner with a slightly damp cloth, wiping the area again.

3) Finish wiping the leather with a dry cloth and buffing the surface.

How to Clean Leather to Eliminate an Ink Mark

Necessary supplies:

1) Take one Q-tip® and dip it into the alcohol.

2) Then, dab the q-tip over the ink stain, rubbing out the mark.

3) Repeat two more times.

4) Next, moisturize the area with one of the oil solutions and buff until the leather develops a slight gloss.

How to Clean Leather to Eliminate Cat Urine

Necessary supplies:

There are two options for eliminating feline (cat) urine: Nature’s Miracle, the orange aroma or tea tree oil. The amount needed depends on the magnitude of the stain. Remember to conduct a test spot. Three to four applications are the norm. Be sure to air-dry the affected leather outside. (To prevent leather garments from becoming hard, roll the garment inside out, as it dries).
