How to Bypass Your Culligan Water Softener

You lost water pressure in your house and you don’t know what to do. This problem is very common in houses equipped with water softeners. We lost water pressure in our house three months ago. We tried in vain to figure it out on our own. When we tried to take a shower, the water just dripped out in a slow stream. If somebody flushed the toilet when you were lathered up with soap; you were out of luck until the drip decided to come back and rinse you off. Fixing the problem is usually easy unless you don’t know how. Our problem was connected to our water softener and it was a very easy fix.

Things you will need

• For this job you only need a small hammer or rubber mallet

1. We will guess you have a water softener if you happen on the same problem we came across with lack of water pressure in our house. This problem often occurs when you discontinue use of your water softener and/or unplug it from the wall. This will work on Culligan water softeners, but will also help you with other types of water softeners on the market.

2. Go to your Culligan water softener and look at it from the front. You will see where the water connects to the unit to the back.

3. We have a Culligan water softener system. Most systems are pretty much the same. The problem is you need to bypass the system so you can get your water pressure back in your house.

4. On both side of the units you will see nobs near the back sides. On the Culligan system, the nob on the left is blue; the nob on the right is red. The nob will be labeled system bypass. You will need to push this nob in to bypass the system.

5. The bypass nobs are usually hard to push in, so get yourself a small hammer. Take the hammer and tap on the end of the bypass nob until it is pushed all the way in. You have bypassed your water softener and you should have the water pressure back in your house.

6. Go into the house and check the water. Flush the toilet and put two sinks on at the same time. You will know immediately if you have your water pressure back in your house. You will jump up for joy when you find out how easy it is to bypass your Culligan water softener and get water pressure back in your house

7. If this does not work, you may have a leak in your system. Your water company will tell you to do the two hour test. Go outside to your water gage. Look at the numbers and write them down. Do not use any water in your house for two hours, if the numbers stay the same, you do not have a leak. Call your water company. If the numbers change, call the water company. You likely have a leak somewhere.

Tips

• When you have a water softener, many problems with water pressure go back to the water softener

• You can bypass your water softener yourself, it is very easy

• Don’t hit the bypass nob too hard with the hammer, just tap it

• This is a very simple how to do job
