How to Apply Mascara like a Pro

Mascara is a staple in many women’s makeup bags. This trusted tool helps accentuate the eyes and bring out their natural beauty with just a few simple strokes of the mascara wand. But do you often find that mascara looks clumpy or uneven when you apply it? If so, you can learn how to apply mascara like a pro in no time!

Take Your Time

When you are in a rush, it is easy to make mistakes with your makeup. It is harder to achieve a clean, fresh look when you half-heartedly patch on your makeup, including your mascara, while you struggle to finish your breakfast and make sure the children are set for school before they are late.

Take your time, and it will show! Your mascara will look a lot neater and cleaner if you take the time to apply it carefully. Get up a few minutes earlier if you often find yourself pushed for time in the mornings so that your mascara looks and feels good.

Apply in Stages

Mascara should be carefully and evenly applied in stages, for the best results. Many women make the mistake of applying mascara liberally and thickly in order to draw attention to their eyes. However, the end result is a lot different to that, as they look as if they have spiders’ legs dangling from their eyes. If you hope for a more natural look, without the caked-on appearance, you should practice applying mascara in stages until you have the desired results.

Use just a small amount of mascara for the first coat and apply it to your top lashes. Wait until the mascara has completely dried (about a minute or two) before applying the second coat. Again, use just a small amount of mascara to lightly coat your lashes. Use light, feathery strokes to ensure the mascara is evenly distributed from the root to the tip. Make sure to always check your appearance in a mirror while you are applying mascara, so that you can correctly gauge your appearance.

Overcoming Smudging

Smudging is a common problem that many women face when they apply mascara. One way to overcome this problem is to only apply mascara to your top lashes. Use gentle, gliding strokes to apply mascara to your top lashes, wait for the mascara to dry and then apply a second coat if necessary. If you are worried about your top and bottom lashes looking uneven, apply a coat of clear mascara to your bottom lashes.

Choosing smudge-proof or waterproof mascara can also help you to win the battle against smudging. This will allow your eyes to glow, rather than look tired and overdone. Experiment with different brands until you find the one that works best for you.

Mascara is a miracle tool that can help transform your eyelashes and draw out your eyes even more. But for a cleaner, more well-defined look, you need to pay attention to how you apply mascara. Allow yourself time, as this is the best way to pay the proper attention to your makeup and to get it right the first time. Then apply the mascara in stages. If smudging is a problem, apply mascara to just your top lashes.
