Homemade Remedies for Tooth Grinding

It can happen at night, or it can occur in the daytime hours as well. As its name implies, Tooth Grinding, or Bruxism- as it’s known in the medical world- is the practice of grinding or forcing one’s teeth together. The main cause of this health disorder is considered to be stress. It’s been shown that people who have high-stress jobs, like brain surgeons and watchmakers, for example, have a tendency to grind their teeth. This problem can also be caused if a person has a dental filling that’s higher than the rest of his/her teeth. No matter what is causing you to suffer from Bruxism, you can try to end the problem by using these homemade remedies for tooth grinding.

If you let your problem with tooth grinding go, without trying homemade remedies or visiting your healthcare professional, you can actually cause a great amount of damage to your teeth. You can wear your teeth down, loosen your teeth, make them become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks, suffer from pains in your jaws, neck and shoulders, and have headaches, actually dislocate your jaws, and suffer from ringing in your ears. As you can tell, tooth grinding is a serious medical disorder that requires immediate treatment.

The first homemade remedy you can try is to relax your mind and body before you go to bed. Studies show that many people who grind their teeth do so because of stress. Therefore, relaxing yourself before you retire can help eliminate this problem.

There are many ways you can try to relax: 1. Take a warm bubble bath. 2. Shower with a lavender-scented gel. The smell of Lavender helps soothe jangled nerves. 3. Try listening to music you enjoy. If you enjoy Pop Music, Celine Dion’s “”My Heart Will Go On” is a hauntingly beautiful ballad. Country music lovers can try listening to “Like We Never Loved At All” by Faith Hill, for example. 4. Drink a glass of warm milk. Milk will induce relaxation and fitful sleep because it contains an amino acid called Tryptophan. 5. Take a walk outside. This activity can use up nervous energy and the fresh air can help you relax at bedtime. 6. Use Yoga movements. Simple Yoga stretches can also relieve stress and promote a peaceful mindset. 7. Drink a cup of Chamomile or Catnip tea. Both will help calm and sedate your mind and body.

During the daytime, you can try to use Calcium and Magnesium as a homemade remedy for tooth grinding. Supplementing your diet with these minerals may stop Bruxism, according to Richard D. Fischer, D.D.S., who is also the president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Fischer recommends 500 milligrams of Calcium and 200 to 300 milligrams of Magnesium on a daily basis. If those dosages don’t relieve your problem with Tooth Grinding, you can increase the dosages to 1,000 milligrams of Calcium and 400 to 600 milligrams of Magnesium.

St. John’s Wort and Valerian Root are two herbs that are known to help relieve depression. They are readily available at your local healthfood store.
