Hamburger Buns – Unique Recipes Your Kids Will Love

Hamburger buns aren’t just for burgers anymore. With four kids at home and a frugal budget to keep, I have found new ways to use hamburger buns. These can be a cheaper way to provide fun, tasty meals the kids will love. As a bonus, they’re easy enough for the kids to pitch in and help or make themselves (with supervision). Simplify your time in the kitchen while saving money with these easy, low-cost recipes.

Yankee sandwiches-we live in the south but my parents are both from up north. This recipe is simply my southern twist to the Reuben sandwich. For this recipe, you’ll need a pack of hamburger buns (regular or wheat), a small can of shredded sour kraut, one package of sliced white cheese (Swiss or mozzarella), and a can of corned beef. Gather up the following condiments: mayonnaise, French dressing, and mustard. Set aside. Place the bottom of each hamburger bun on a baking sheet, adding mayonnaise to each. Open and slice the corned beef and add to each bun. Next, open and drain the sour kraut, spooning a small amount onto each bun. Top this with a slice of cheese. Finish your Yankee sandwich off by adding some mustard and French dressing onto each of the hamburger bun tops. Pop in the oven at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Tip: you can make these in advance, wrapping each in foil for eating later. Also, as there are different tastes in our home, some of these may or may not have certain items (such as kraut or mustard). Therefore, it helps toeach wrapped sandwich with the appropriate person.

Mini pizzas-nothing more than individual sized pizzas fixed to suit everyone’s personal preference. These are great for snacks or an easy supper. All you need is a pack of hamburger buns, a 15 oz. can of pizza sauce, a package of shredded pizza-style cheese, and assorted toppings (pepperoni, black olives, green peppers, onions, etc.). Place each bun, including tops, face up on a foil-lined cookie sheet (takes two for all buns). Spoon on pizza sauce, add cheese, and desired toppings. Put in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is thoroughly melted. Tip: One pack of hamburger buns can make up to sixteen mini pizzas, which can be frozen for later use.

Cinnamon buns-this is an easy breakfast treat that can be made in advance with leftovers frozen for later. You’ll need a cup each of sugar and cinnamon mixed together and set aside. Then heat (to a boil) a cup of brown sugar with a teaspoon of vanilla, ½ to ¾ cup of water, and a couple tablespoons of butter. Whisk until blended and syrupy. Using a pack of hamburger buns, dip each bun into brown sugar mix (can spoon on if desired) and roll in cinnamon mixture. Place onto foil-lined cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for around 15-20 minutes.

Toasted peanut butter and banana buns-these make a great after school snack or lunch. The kids love them too! Prepare bun bottoms with peanut butter and top with sliced bananas. Add hamburger bun top and toast in oven (or toaster oven) at 300 degrees for about 5-10 minutes. Serve with celery sticks.

While there are probably lots more to do with hamburger buns, these great recipes have brought smiles to our kids. Hope yours enjoy them too!
