Growing pansies in the Spring brings back life to your yard after a harsh and draining winter.

I love planting pansies in the Spring in my Florida yard as early as February because pansies are so cheerful.

Of course you can also grow pansies in the fall in Florida or parts of the South, but they usually die in late November or December.

Pansies are related to the viola which has a similar appearance but is smaller. You can identify a pansy by its five rounded petals. I recently planted white and purple pansies in my front yard.

Here are a few tips for growing pansies in the Spring to spruce up the landscape:

No. 1: Check your USDA plant hardiness map. You can grow pansies in zones 2 to 11 as annuals in the spring and fall. If you live in zones 9 south to zone 11 which includes south Texas and Florida, your pansies may come back in the spring, but it’s not a guarantee I’ve found in Florida.

No. 2: Select the healthiest plants form the nursery. Look for plants that have a lot of healthy leaves and buds. Select the baby pansies so you will get the most bang for your buck in terms of blooms.

No. 3: Plant your pansies in the sun as opposed to a shady spot. If you plant them in containers, you can always move them to the best location. Pansies make excellent container plants for the porch or deck. Be creative and recycle old Styrofoam coolers to create a flower bed of pansies.

No. 4: Because pansies have delicate roots, you will want to use a nice potting soil and create enough space to plant the pansies.

No. 5: For best visual impact, plant pansies in mass. It’s OK if you have a little space between them when you first plant them in the spring. They will fill in the empty space as they grow and mature.

Pansies are the best flowers for a spring garden because they love the cool weather and are so pretty and delicate.

Are pansies edible? Pansies are edible flowers that can be used for decorating cakes. Water your pansies occasionally since they don’t like wet roots. Some pansies have more of a scent than others. Plant the yellow and blue pansies if you are desiring a nice perfume smell.

What is the meaning of pansies? Pansy or “pensee” means thoughts in French. Give white pansies with purple markings for Valentine’s Day to signify being in love. Sending pansy flowers can mean you are thinking of the person!
