Grilled Watermelon Recipes – a Review

I’ve heard the rave about grilled watermelon but I wasn’t sold. To me, watermelon is cold and refreshing, not hot and soft. While I was at the store, I grabbed a watermelon and became determined to find out if grilled watermelon is worth all the hype.

I looked up a couple of recipes on how to grill watermelon, but there are not many of them. I tried one recipe from Food.com, I grilled the watermelon plain, and I created a recipe of my own. This is what I thought of each recipe.


Grilled Watermelon (Food.com)

Cut the watermelon in wedges. Sprinkle with salt and set up on the rind for half an hour. This will release water inside the watermelon.
Rinse wedges with cold water and pat firmly with paper towels to squeeze excess water out.
Preheat the grill on high
Brush both sides of the watermelon with olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.
Grill on each side until grill marks appear, about 5 minutes.

What did I think?
This recipe wasn’t too bad. I was pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite. The watermelon still had a firm texture and the taste of watermelon was enhanced. The grill marks on the watermelon were very attractive. I thought it would be terrific on a salad with spinach. The next time I grill watermelon, I would not put the pepper on the watermelon if I was going to eat it as is. I would leave it only with olive oil and salt. This is a must-try!

Grilled watermelon (Plain)

I grilled the watermelon as it was. No salt, pepper, olive oil, nothing. I just put it on the grill.

What did I think?
The watermelon came out very pretty with light grill marks and the taste was enhanced on its own. If you want low-fat grilling with watermelon, this would be how to grill it. Just watch the watermelon closer on the grill as it will stick.

Grilled watermelon (my own recipe)

Squeeze lemon juice on both sides of the lemon and let it sit a short while. Just before you put the watermelon on the grill, brush honey all around the watermelon. Grill the same.

What did I think?
This recipe made the watermelon much sweeter. The honey glazed the outside and the lemon gave it a tiny twinge of tang. It was really good, but very sweet. If you’ve grilled watermelon before and like it, try this recipe for a new twist.
