Great Ice Fishing Spots in Wisconsin

Wisconsin is a great place for fishing with all the lake areas we have to offer. Even when it becomes winter in Wisconsin, all of the die hard fishermen are still out on the lakes. Ice fishing is almost as popular as fishing is in the winter. They store their boats away and bring out their ice shacks. No matter what lake you pass you always see ice shacks and vehicles taking over the ice. I asked about five different life long fishermen what their favorite spots were and here is what they told me were the best fishing areas in the state.

Out of all of them I was told that Sturgeon Bay in Door County is definitely one of the top ice fishing areas in the Midwest. Here is where you can fish for an abundance of bass, walleye, northern pike, salmon, panfish, and Brown trout. This area is the best for small mouth bass and trout. Sturgeon Bay is known for its Northern Pike being very active during the winter months. Early in the winter ice fishing season and also late are the best times to catch Northern Pike. Stout line and large shiner minnows are the way to catch these great tasting fish.

There are other creeks also like Hein’s Creek and Hibbard’s Creek which is also in the Door County area, that are great for ice fishing also. These creeks are awesome for catching trout. In all, throughout the area, there are 300 miles of shoreland and several inland lakes where you can plant your ice shack. So there will be no problem finding a great fishing spot.

The Green Bay area is known for having some of the best perch in North America. Caddy Lake is one that continues into a chain of other smaller lakes. These lakes are great for small mouth bass, crappie, and walleye also. This is a really beautiful area around the lakes. A lot of people fish on here in winter, so find your spot fast here.

Lake Mendota in Madison is another popular ice fishing spot. This is a great location to catch Perch. You can also rent shacks here and it also comes with all the accessories like a heater, rods, auger, drilled holes, and a ride to and from the shack. Yellowstone Lake which is also near by offers 450 acres of great fishing. Both of these lakes are great fishing spots.

Delavan Lake is located In Delavan is known for its panfish. It is located in the middle of 275 acres of woods. At night is known for the Crappies biting. On the west end the Lake is shallower and is a great area for bluegills. You can find perch throughout the whole lake. This is another very beautiful area surrounded by Wisconsin woods.

On Moose Lake, which is just East of Hayward there is great fishing there for walleyes, crappies, perch, and panfish. This lake can get a little crowded in winter. So if you want a spot here, you have to get there early. The West part of the lake is known for having the best for muskies and walleyes. Hayward is a big tourist area. So you won’t have a problem finding a hotel or a cabin to rent when you go here to fish.

If that is too crowded for you, you can go check out some of the other lakes in the area. There is also Teal, Lost Land, Spider, Ghost, Twin Lakes, Gridstone, and the big Round lakes all throughout the area. These are all great fishing spots. Walleyes, crappies and panfish are abundant in these surrounding lakes.

The Eagle River area is also a great ice fishing spot. You will be fishing in Wisconsin’s beautiful Northwood’s area. There is an abundance of blue gills in this lake. The lake also has perch, bass and Northern pike. This is a great winter recreation area in all. Snowmobiling is also very popular in this area.

Sheboygan County has some great fishing lakes also. When people think of Sheboygan they automatically think great fishing. These lakes are filled with Coho salmon, trout, brown trout and walleye. It is one of the best areas to catch salmon. They have many different shack rental shops and fishing charters that take you out on the lakes. The County has lots of Lakes to fish on. You can fish on Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, Lake Elkharrt, Crystal Lake, Lake Puckaway and Lake Poygan. These are all very popular lakes to fish at in the area.

These are just a few of the many favorite ice fishing spots in the state. Ice fishing in Wisconsin has become very popular. Make sure you find a lake that you like and a location that can become your favorite fishing spot. And always be safe out on the water.
