Games to Play Inside when It’s to Cold Outside

Week after week you hear the famous “I’m board, Mom”. You try and give them some cleaning chores to get your work done and give them something to do. That still don’t work. Now you hear ” I don’t want to”. During the cold months and even rainy days have some games on backup. This way the kids will have something to do this year.

Hold a Lego contest

A great game for kids is having a Lego contest. Kids love to compete. You could have a small prize handy or a treat for the winner. If you have a few kids around the same age then this is perfect. Pass out Lego’s to all of the kids. Make sure they all get the same number of Lego’s and the same size Lego’s. Then give them a certain amount of time to build something creative. When they are done, place them on a table and number them. Give each child and each adult home at the time a piece of paper. Have them write the number down that they think is best. Tally up all the numbers and announce the winner. If there is a tie, Then have them compete in a tie breaker. Give them less Lego’s than before and less time. Everyone votes again. Tally up the winner and give them a prize.

Obstacle course

If you have a big enough house for this and kids wont get hurt then this is a perfect way to wear kids out for the day. The best way for this is to create things throughout the house. Have them climb under a table, over a couch, through the cushion tunnel etc. Time each kid to see who can do it the best. We always let them do a practice round, and then go for the time. The kids have a blast building this and running through it. It also burns a lot of energy.

Dice Learning game

This game is great for little ones. You could even change it up some to make it better for the older kids. If you are in the stage of trying to teach your little one all about animals then this is a great way. You will need a medium sized box. Make sure its something your little one can pick up and toss very easy. Tape up all the sides together so it makes a cube. Your wanting it to look like large dice. As a group gather up some kid friendly magazines and find pictures of animals. Cut them out and paste one on each side of the box. When your finished you can either leave it like that or cover it with clear shelf paper to make it stronger. Take turns throwing the die and imitating the animal. For example, If a chicken comes up, my kids have to yell chicken, make the sound and then walk like a chicken. This is a great learning game and a great game to have them lose some of that never ending energy they seem to have.
