Ft. Desoto Dog Beach is just minutes from St. Petersburg Beach, Florida in Pinellas county and should be on America’s Top 10 Beaches list
It is a wonderful, secluded beach only the locals know about, right here in the Tampa Bay area. Just a few minutes from St. Petersburg Beach and located in Pinellas County Florida. Most of the residents of the Tampa Bay area know of it and visit often. Ft. Desoto Dog Beach is a part of the island of the Ft. Desoto State park complex located in beautiful Pinellas County, Florida in the Tampa Bay area. While there are a few beaches on this island state park and Ft.Desoto’s “North Beach” was voted #1 on the Top 10 in 2005, I believe that the Ft. Desoto Dog beach should be voted in the top ten.
This beach should be on America’s Top 10 Beaches list. This soft, white sandy beach is one of the best for people or pets. It is a quiet, secluded haven from the rigors of everyday life. It has a panoramic view of the water towards the North Beach area and Ft. Desoto and in the other direction Tampa Bay and the Skyway Bridge. I have visited this beach on numerous occasions over the years and the water is always shallow, clean and comfortable. The waves are gentle. It is the best beach for sharing a day with your best friend. The shell hunting is great, wait for low tide to expose the best ones and pick them up at your leisure.
This best friends’ beach location in Ft. Desoto Park has an attached dog park, the Paw Playground to let your dogs socialize with other animals when in the mood for some serious play. All the amenities are here, hose off pads to attend to our best friend’s needs after a relaxing day on the beach and two types of water fountains; one for humans and one for our beloved dogs. Swaying palms over the benches help the owners stay cool while their dogs play. Convent parking is only a short distance away from the entrance.
Children and adults love all the possible things to do at Ft. Desoto state park. Close by you can also bicycle, rollerblade, trike, walk or jog on the paved trails running the length of this island. If you fish then you can enjoy the fishing pier just left of our dog beach. If you are a history buff, we have Ft. Desoto, a historic landmark close by to examine. If you are inclined to walk a bit then take a journey and stretch your legs on a nature walk on the island for an interesting look at the flora and fauna of this area. If you camp or want to host a group picnic or forgot to bring some food then Ft. Desoto state park has the amenities for that also. And across this whole island, convenient parking and rangers to assist when needed. Fort Desoto State Park is open daily 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. And remember that if you fish, a saltwater fishing license for its two fishing piers is required in Florida.
