Free, or Nearly Free, Kids’ Activities for Summer 2012

In 2012, summer officially begins on June 20. School is almost over and soon the temperatures in Southern California will be 90 or even 100 degrees. This means I have to have plenty of activities planned for the summer. While there will be days when we will pay for admission, most of the time I try to find free kids’ activities for those hot summer days.

Outdoor “Inspired” Family Activities

Our family loves camping and the outdoors. This summer, Bass Pro Shops have free family activities. From June 9 to July 15, the nationwide store will provide family friendly activities on every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. While activities vary, some examples are s’mores making, birdhouse craft and the “shooting range.” With more than 50 locations, there might be a Bass Pro Shop in your area.

Summer Movie Express

On those days where the temperature goes over 100 degrees, I’m always looking for a place where we can cool off. The movie theater is a great way to beat the heat. Regal Cinemas have one dollar summer movies. These flicks take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in June, July and August. Some examples of the movies are “The Smurfs,” “Dolphin Tale,” and “Hoodwinked Too.” All of the movie selections are either G or PG.

Bowl for Free

This summer you can register your kids “for 2 free games” of bowling every day, “all summer long.” While I don’t think we will be bowling every day, it is certainly a nice offer. Go to kidsbowlfree.com for more information.

Reading Programs

Although my daughter isn’t going to school this summer, we will still be encouraging her to read. There are many summer reading programs for kids. Pottery Barn Kids has a weekly story time along with special events for kids on the weekend. In addition, the store features a summer reading challenge where kids can complete an “award winning” book list. Then, they turn in their list for a special prize. The challenge ends August 22. Barnes and Noble is another store with a summer reading program. Read eight books and fill out the reading journal. Then, bring the completed journal to the store for a free book. My local store also has weekly story times. You can always check your local library for more programs.

This summer, have fun and save some money too!
