Free Beauty Tips: a Grab Bag of Facts About Makeup, and Extending Your Beauty Dollar

Beauty Facts:

1. Smokey doesn’t always mean “dark”.

Although using a dark color may seem good in theory, black is not always the color to go for. There is always that possibility of looking like you got attacked by a bottle of black ink (eeek!), so consider using lighter colors. Instead of black, consider using grays or silvers, or even some color to add a little punch and keeping the smokey eye looking fresh for a daytime look.

2. Color doesn’t always mean “clown.

If used right, color can really brighten the face and make you look fresh and awake.
Still scared? Consider some of these color combinations to get you started.
A great color combination that works on everybody — and is a great day or night look — is gold for the eyes and pink for the lips. Still bothered? Try out peach and apricot colors (which also look good on everybody): they also brighten the face while adding a bright pop of color without looking too outlandish or garish.

3. Lining your eyes doesn’t always make them “small”.

Having small eyes doesn’t mean that you can’t line them. While tight-lining may not be in your immediate future, you can still line your eyes and have them looking defined when you add a white eye pencil. Just line your water line (which is the inner rim of your eye) then follow the outside line with your color of choice.

4. Bronzer can be used as “contour powder.”

Not only does bronzer give you that sun-kissed glow all year around, but it can make a great contour powder as well. It looks natural without making it look like you applied dirt on your face. Apply it under your jaw line, in the hollow of the cheek, the temples, and lightly on the sides of the nose and blend well.

4. Red doesn’t have to be “scary”.

If you’re afraid of red (but you’ve secretly been wanting to wear it), try this: Take your index finger and lightly pat the color onto your lips. When your finished, lightly go over it with a clear (or sheer) gloss, or lip balm.

Tips to extend your beauty buck:

1. Blush doesn’t always have to be for the cheeks, and lipstick doesn’t always have to be for the lips.

If you find that you’re in a rush during the morning, consider doing double duty with your blush. After you’re done with your cheeks, dip a clean brush into your blush and lightly dust your lips and then top your lips with lip balm or clear lip gloss. The opposite is true of lipstick as well. Just take a clean finger and blend well!

2. Shimmery pale shadow can double as an all-over highlighter.

Grab a champagne — or a shimmery white — dip a clean bush into the container, and highlight your cheekbones, browbones, and the bottom half of your lip. Voila! Instant glow!

3. Out of lipstick? Make your own from your own eyeshadow!

Have a pink or red eyeshadow that you’ve been too afraid to use? Pulverize it and mix it with Vaseline or Chapstick and you have a brand new lip color!

4. Make your own tinted moisturizer.

Have you always been wanting to try tinted moisturizer, but didn’t want to spend the money? Just mix one part of your favorite foundation with two parts moisturizer, and apply.

Off to the vanity, ladies!
