Family Friendly Things to Do in Galveston, Texas

Every Texan knows about Galveston Island. It was a major Texas town until a hurricane destroyed most of the town and left 6,000 dead. That was in 1900. The town has recovered since and is now the perfect weekend getaway for families looking for some fun on the Gulf Coast.

The beaches in Galveston, Texas cover 32 miles and are now protected by a huge seawall. As a result, the beach area is simply known as the “Seawall”. Galveston is home to the popular Moody Gardens, Dickens on the Strand and some very unique and interesting gift shops. Take a look at what Galveston has to offer for families.

Moody Gardens: Besides hanging out on the beach, Moody Gardens is probably one of the most popular tourist attractions for families. Covering more than 156 acres, you can walk through a glass dome rain forest pyramid filled with exotic plants, butterflies, fish and birds. Recently, Moody Gardens also added a bat exhibit, which is popular with children of all ages. While you are there, check out the latest IMAX film or visit the 1.5 million gallon aquarium. This aquarium features live seals and penguins. Also, the kids will enjoy the manmade white sand beach for swimming or building sand castles. If you are in Galveston, Moody Gardens is a “must see”. Ticket prices vary according to age and how many attractions you want to do.

The Colonel: This three story paddlewheel boat docks near Moody Gardens and takes you on a one-hour tour of Galveston Bay. During the ride, the boat captain will provide a narrative of the history and sea life in Galveston. Make sure you stop in at the dining area for some ice cream sandwich if you visit on a hot summer day.

Galveston Island State Park: This 2000 acres state park offers everything you would want to do while visiting Galveston. Best of all, there is no admission. Pack your beach gear and a picnic and come here to enjoy swimming, camping and beachcombing. There are musical productions performed at the outside amphitheater during the year, so check the schedule before you head out.

The Strand: This is downtown Galveston. It is filled with interesting shops, including antique and toy stores and eating-places. The Strand is the place to go if you are looking for good seafood. Also, this is place where Dickens on the Strand is held every December.

Souvenir stores: Galveston is the place to find quirky and unusual souvenirs. There are several shops that are located right out on the water. Kids will be fascinated by these stores and will love walking out on the pier and looking into the water. These shops carry the typical souvenir type items such as t-shirts and shot glasses, but you will also find huge seashells, hats and items made out of shells.

Places to eat: You will never run out of good places to eat when you visit Galveston. It has the typical chain restaurants such as Rainforest Café and Joe’s Crab Shack, but it also has some places that you have never heard of before. If you are looking for fancy then head on over to Gaido’s. This place has been serving seafood in the same location for 85 years. The last time I went there, they still served their food on silver platters with the covers.

Places to Stay: You will also never lack places to stay while you visit Galveston. There is a nice Holiday Inn and a La Quinta, but for a special treat, try the Moody Gardens Hotel. It does run a bit higher than most other hotels, but it also offers a luxury indoor and outdoor pool, spa facilities, and a play area for children. During peak times, it books up fast, so make sure you call ahead. Another great place to stay while you are visiting is the Hotel Galvez. This hotel opened in 1911 and is decked out in Spanish Colonial style. It is a nice place to stay when you are looking for something a little different. Also, consider Flagship Hotel Over the Water. This is a neat place to stay when you bring the kids. It literally sits right over the water. You get an ocean view that you won’t soon forget.

Galveston is a perfect family-friendly travel destination. You can come here for a weekend or a week and you will never run out of fun and interesting things to do.
