Family Favorite Earth Day Events in Houston, Texas

Earth Day can be celebrated every day but doing even just the smallest things like turning off the water while brushing your teeth, or making sure the lights are off when you aren’t using them. But each year we can celebrate the official Earth Day with many events throughout our cities and communities, all of which remind us of why we need to be careful with our resources as well as the beauty of the natural world around us. In Houston you can find Earth Day events at many locations like parks, museums, and even stores. Here are our family’s three favorite Earth Day Events in Houston, TX.

At the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center you and your family can Get Outside for Earth Day and enjoy activities, a walk or hike along the Arboretum trails, animal activity stations, live reptiles, hybrid vehicles on display and more on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event features:

Don’t miss out on a very special sculpture by Houston area eco-artist Mark Bradford, who specializes in crafting art from recycled metals and scavenged materials. Nomo is designed to help visitors learn about and better understand the adverse impact of plastic waste on our environment. Admission to the Arboretum Earth Day event is free. For more information on location, directions and parking visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center online or call 713-681-8433.

Visit the Miller Outdoor Theatre for Bella Gaia: A Poetic Vision of Earth from Space on April 21, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Bella Gaia (Beautiful Earth) is a “Living Atlas multimedia journey of our world, expressing the deeply moving beauty of planet Earth as seen through the eyes of astronauts.” A collaboration with NASA and award-winning director and classically-trained violinist Kenji Williams, this presentation and the live performance features Williams, world music performers and dancers, with orbiting visualizations of Earth from space. This event is free, though advance tickets reservations are recommended. For more information on location, directions and ticket information visit the Miller Outdoor Theater online.

The Nature Discovery Center is host to a Spring Fling Earth Day Celebration on April 14, 2012 from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. with a free family event that includes nature walks, children’s crafts and activities, live music, exhibits and a Spring Gift Market. The Bellaire Garden Club’s annual Spring Plant Sale will be held under the pavilions from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For more information, directions and area information visit The Nature Discovery Center online.
Earth Day celebrations don’t have to be an official event. They can be something as easy as a walk in the park with the whole family. For us, the best part of all is a chance to get out and about and enjoy the day while learning more about science, nature and the Earth.
