Elegant and Casual Medium Layered Hairstyles

There’s nothing like a medium length layered hairstyle for ease and flexibility, and thanks to celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Katherine Heigl, both the casual and elegant versions are very trendy. Check out all the different hairstyles and looks you can create with medium length layered hair cut.

Medium Length Layered Hair Style: Elegant or Formal Looks

The easiest and quickest formal or elegant look for a medium length layered hair style is the upswept twist. Simply pull the long pieces together in back like you’re going to put it in a ponytail, twist the tail up, and then pin in place. You can use a butterfly clip for a less formal look or pin it in place invisibly using hair pins.

Similarly, you can pin and twist the layers into spirals with crystal-studded barrettes for a sparkly look for prom or a wedding. Take each layer individually, twist into a spiral and then secure with a small, inch-long barrette or clip. You can do this a dozen times or more on the sides, top and back. Tame fly-aways with smooth and shine pomade or spray to set.

Medium Length Layered Hair Style: Easy Casual Looks

There are tons of super cute ways to style your hair when you’re on the go with medium length layers. Keeping it down and sporting a shag cut is easy enough: simply take a quarter-sized amount of shine and smooth product and run it through your ends and lift your roots to get body and tame fly-aways. If you’ve got any pieces that won’t lay right, use wax for piecing.

Another look with minimal maintenance are pigtails. These are super cute and easily done by gathering the long pieces in two pigtails, one each just behind the ears at the nape of the neck. The top layers hang free to frame your face. You can piece these with wax or spray them to set.

Medium Length Layered Hair Style: Alternate Looks

The only problem with a medium length layered hair style is that once you’ve chosen it, it’s difficult to change unless you want to cut it short or let it grow out for a year or so until it’s long enough to be evened out. There are some fun things you can do if you want to change it up a little bit, though: hair extensions are one way to go long for awhile and they can last between a couple of months and a year depending upon the style of extensions you choose. Highlights and dyes are another way to give yourself a new look, especially if you accentuate the layers by dying the tips a different color.

Medium Length Layered Hair Style: Products You Need

Whether you choose a casual or elegant medium length layered hair style, you’ll need a few basic products to create your looks: a blow dryer, round brush, straightening and/or curling iron, heat protector, shine and smoothing product, wax for chunky or pieced looks and mousse and hair spray to set formal looks.
