Easy Tips for Fixing Cartridge Faucets

Cartridge type faucets are some of the easiest faucet types to repair since they can be replaced easily in little time. Cartridge type faucets typically leak or fail due to a broken O-ring, which is a very easy repair. Having worked at a hardware store for multiple years, I have seen many customers bringing in their cartridge faucet looking for a new one, when in fact they just needed a new inexpensive O-ring. This article will look at 10 tips for easy repair of cartridge type faucets.

1. Turn off water valve or water supply

Typically, the water valve will be located directly under the faucet, but if there is no water valve, you can turn off the water supply to the faucet by turning off the water supply to the entire house.

2. Turn on the faucet until no water comes out

Turn the faucet on until no water comes out after the water supply valve is properly turned off. This will ensure that minimal water leaks when disconnecting the entire faucet.

3. Disconnect the water supply to the faucet

After the water valve is turned off, you will want to disconnect the water supply to the faucet.

4. Towel or rag

You will want to have a towel or rag with you when disconnecting the water supply in case there is any water leakage.

5. Removing the faucet handle

The faucet handle is usually help together with screws; disconnect the handle with a screwdriver.

6. The O-ring

The O-ring is located on the aerator, which should be immediately shown after removing of the handle. Damaged O-rings are the leaking cause for a cartridge faucet to break or leak. Check the O-ring for damage (worn down, broken, etc.), if the ring appears damaged bring it into your hardware store to get a replacement.

7. Hardware store

Bring your O-ring along with the aerator to your local hardware store ask for help (if needed) to find the right O-ring for your specific aerator. If the aerator is damaged the store professionals should also be able to tell you.

8. Replace the O-ring

Replace the O-ring and check for leaks and water pressure, if replacing the O-ring did not work then you may consider purchasing a new cartridge system.

9. Replacing the cartridge system

The cartridge system is very inexpensive and can be replaced easily; the instructions come with every new cartridge system and are typically very easy to follow.

10. Check for leaks on the new system

If the new system works properly, you should have no leaks and the correct water pressure. If the unit is not working properly, then consider taking it apart again and checking for errors that may have been made during installation.
