Easy Sewing Project: Fleece Shower Wrap

Don’t you hate it when you have to get dressed immediately after getting out of the shower? No matter how well you dry yourself clothing just doesn’t slide on the way it does before a bath. The remedy to the problem? Don’t get dressed immediately after your shower! What to wear in the meanwhile? A comfy fleece shower wrap you sew up in no time! Not just a towel you wrap around yourself then struggle to keep it in place; a wearable after-bath wrap that’s cute and comfortable.

Made like a shift dress with no sleeves – but sporting straps – the shower wrap covers you and stays in place. Make it from fleece for a warm, cozy feel or choose a different fabric. Appropriate cloth includes a beach or oversized towel, terry cloth, or even t-shirt material.

If you’re using a towel to make the new wrap, and the towel is the right size, there’s no need to cut or sew it. If you’re using fabric, measure for the width and length, then quickly sew up the wrap. To decide how long to cut the fleece or other fabric, wrap a tape measure around you, just below the underarm area. Wrap it all the way around and back to the area where you started, then continue with the tape measure over a few more inches. To cut the width, measure from the mid-chest area, down to the mid-thigh, knee, or other length.

It’s really easy to sew the shower wrap. Simply fold each edge over once, about a half-inch, then once again. Stitch down both long sides then hem the two short sides. Decide on which long side will be the top of the wrap and sew half-inch elastic across it. Use a zigzag stitch and sew from one end to the other. Slightly tug the elastic as you sew to gather the fabric a little. Stay at least about an inch away from the edge.

Wrap the towel around you and pin it to make a good fit. Down the vertical edge of the towel you’ll need a closure of your choice. You can sew on Velcro dots or just pin and sew the end of the wrap to the towel itself. When worn, this edge goes off-center, down the right side or left side of the body, rather than straight down the center. Where the short end of the towel is on the inside of the wrap, sew on a Velcro dot or stitch the two top edges together so that the piece doesn’t hang down on the inside.

Cut two straps from the fleece, terry cloth or other material. If you’ve made the wrap from a towel you can cut a second towel to make the straps or even sew on wide ribbon or lace. If you’re using fabric, cut the straps to the length you need and the width you want. Place the material together with right sides facing each other. Sew around one short end and two long sides. Turn the straps right-side-out. There is no need to sew the open end closed at this point.

Pin the straps where you want them on the shower wrap and sew across the ends to attach them. After that, the bath towel is ready to wear. You’ll have to go right back to the cutting table, though, because you know you’ll want more than one!
