Early ‘Adults Only’ Sesame Street Seasons?

At stores, you may notice something strange on Sesame Street DVDs and videos. “Sesame Street: Old School” is a collection of early Sesame Street episodes dating back to 1969. The first two volumes, however, come with something very unexpected: A label that warns some content may be inappropriate for younger viewers and instead should be enjoyed by an adult audience.

The label actually reads: “These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.” Controversial scenes involving the Cookie Monster and the Grouch have been changed for the DVD release among other alterations. This warning caught the public off-guard at first since Sesame Street is so accepted worldwide as quality programming for children. Thebrings into question if children’s programming from the 60’s is still appropriate today.

Part of the concern has to do with a pipe-devouring cookie monster coupled with a parody of Masterpiece Theatre. Another potential problem with the early seasons is the grouch’s feral behavior that may be seen as a bad example for children.

For some, these changes do more harm than good by damaging the nostalgic memories of kids who grew up during these early episodes. For others, early Sesame Street seasons are far too risky for today’s politically correct and sensitive climate. But as for Sesame Street, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to what kids watch no matter how mild the controversy may be.

Censorship has evolved over the years, but with this new caution tape slapped around Sesame Street- parents and teachers may be reevaluating guidelines and standards more strictly than in the past. Family Education estimates that a child will spend an average of 35 hours a week behind the television. This estimate, however it may vary across the world, reflects just how much impact a DVD or television program can make on a child’s mind.

Because children tend to watch T.V. more than adults- soaking in, deciphering and imitating more information- they are more prone to fall victim to inappropriate programming. Still, it’s hard to gauge what is inappropriate and what isn’t from parent to parent- but with a new ‘adults only’ warning on Sesame Street, parents may have to think twice before pressing play. At the same time, it’s all a matter of opinion and it might come down to watching the shows again to determine what’s good or bad for your kids.
