I called Eric one Friday; I was delighted at his down-to-earth nature and helpful attitude before knowing whether or not I was going to spend any money. Here’s how the conversation went:

“Hi there, I would like to buy a custom-made suit for my husband’s birthday, but I don’t know where to begin. I’ve never done this before.”

I could hear his smile over the phone. “When is his birthday,” he said.

“January.”

“Then, you’ll need to have your decision made … in the next couple of weeks.”

“Okay, what’s the next step?” I said. “I mean, do I buy a suit and bring it in to you, or do I buy it there … or….” I asked.

“How much money are you looking to spend?”

“I don’t know, three or four hundred?”

“Then, you’ll need to buy a suit in town and bring it to me to alter. Our suits, for the bottom line fabric run from $725 to $1200.”

I laughed out loud; I couldn’t help it because I felt so unschooled about the subject. He was quite nice and never talked down to me throughout the entire conversation even when I said, “Well, I guess I know where to go when I’m a millionaire!”

“Actually,” he said, “it’s quite the other way around. You get the suit, then you become the millionaire”.
