Day Trips to Peaks Island, Maine

A day trip to Peaks Island from Portland, Maine is a wonderful way to see the Maine coast. It is a “must see” whenever I have family visiting from other parts of the country. My friends and family are always delighted with this charming island and talk about our visits for years afterwards.

Peaks Island has many year-round residents, which means the ferry between the coast and island runs on a daily basis. This makes it easy for day visitors to pick travel times that work well with their schedule and your visit can last from just a couple hours to several weeks if you choose. Call Casco Bay Lines (207.774.7871) or visit their website for the most current ferry schedule. The Peaks Island ferry ride is a quick 20 minutes each way.

Although the ferry does transport vehicles to Peaks Island, a car won’t be necessary on this small Maine island. It is just 2 miles long and 1 mile wide, making it easy to get around on foot. Visitors can even rent bicycles from vendors to enjoy Peaks Island on eco-friendly wheels. You are welcome to bring your own bicycles, which I have done with my sons in the past.

The main roads are paved but there are several dirt roads winding around Peaks Island to tempt those with a sense of adventure. Do remember that some pathways are private and respect the owner’s request if they have posted that there is no trespassing. Kayak rentals or small boat tours are also available for those who want to travel around the island by water.

Small beaches, cliff fronts, and quaint houses will catch your attention around every turn. The fresh ocean air is invigorating and the many ocean vistas are spellbinding. Take an hour (or two or four) to search the beaches for shells, crabs, and sea glass or just sit on one of the many rocky points and admire the seagulls and waves. We have a glass jar half full of sea glass from Peaks Island and we always manage to find new pieces to add whenever we visit. The islanders are friendly and you will likely meet other day visitors as you explore Peaks Island.

Several eateries are available if you want to take a break on Peaks Island and just enjoy the breathtaking ocean views. Selection may be limited in the winter months, but during the summer the fresh seafood and restaurants are abundant.

For those who fall in love with Peaks Island and want a longer taste of the island life, there are a handful of inns and many vacation rentals available for a longer stay. There are year round markets on the island if you need to shop for food and other household items, although it will generally be less expensive to bring supplies with you from the mainland if you plan an overnight stay.

Peaks Island is a jewel in Casco Bay. Don’t miss your chance to see this magnificent island on your visit to southern Maine.
