Creative Ways to Decorate a Small Sun Porch

A small sun porch can be a great place to sit and relax after a long day at work. It can also be a fantastic place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee while enjoying the view. No matter the size, it should be a well decorated and comfortable part of the home. It can include comfy furnishings, coordinating tabletop decor and more.

I had always wanted a small sun porch, and I hired a company to build one on top of my existing deck. It was not very spacious, but it looked and felt roomy because of the walls of windows. In the warmer months of the year, I enjoyed fresh air and soft breezes, and when the temperatures dropped, I added a small electric fireplace to make the space warm and cozy. The sun porch was my favorite place to sit and watch backyard birds and other wildlife that wandered onto my lakeside property. I chose to decorate it using a few creative methods.

Decorate a Small Sun Porch with Comfy Wicker Furnishings

I love the look and feel of wicker. High quality wicker is extraordinarily sturdy, and it provides natural support and just the right amount of flexibility. I also love thick and comfy cushions that are easy to wipe clean. When combined with wicker furnishings on a small sun porch, they are eye catching and exceptionally appealing.

I purchased a three-piece wicker furniture set for my small sun porch. I selected white wicker because I loved the clean crisp look. I also selected gorgeous maroon cushions. They coordinated beautifully with the deep maroon hollyhocks just beyond the sun porch windows. When a window provides a lovely view, I decorate the interior of my home with particularly beautiful exterior hues.

Use Minimal Window Coverings

A sun porch is a place to take in the warmth of the sun, and panes of glass should not be covered with heavy window treatments. If possible, do not use window treatments of any variety. Otherwise, opt for lightweight Roman shades that can be raised and lowered as desired. They will allow light to filter in while providing privacy when needed. I did not add window treatments. I used tropical plants to slightly obscure the view of passersby on both sides of the room.

I selected plants that thrive in direct sunlight. However, I did not turn my small sun porch into a jungle. I added two potted tropical plants – one for each side of the room. I repotted the plants in beautiful glazed white clay pots with maroon accents.

I used a number of creative ways to decorate my sun porch. The beautiful view, coordinating decor and the comfy furnishings made it one of my favorite places to relax. I plan to decorate other rooms in my home using the same method. A sun porch is not the only place to decorate using creative methods of coordinating exterior views with interior hues.
