Creative Ideas for Wall Coverings

Sure, you could use a boring, traditional wall covering like wallpaper or paint, but why not spice up your decor a bit by using a creative wall covering in any room in your home? Using a bit of imagination and some elbow grease you can turn the walls of any room into an artistic masterpiece that will beautifully compliment your furnishings and help to make your room unique. Here are some ideas for creative wall coverings that you may want to try in your own home.

If you love texture and an earthy feel, using rolls of bamboo fencing on your wall can be a beautiful addition to any room. Bamboo fencing typically comes in rolls that measure about 8′ long by 6′ tall. The bamboo used in the bamboo fencing can range in size anywhere from twigs all the way up to rods of bamboo, so you should choose whatever size you would like for your decor.

Buy enough screens to go all the way around your room, or just do an accent wall with them. Start by painting your wall in a color that compliments the bamboo. Once the paint has dried, unroll the bamboo fencing and begin attaching it to the wall with a staple gun. You can continue the bamboo all the way around your room or limit it to an accent wall behind a larger piece of furniture. The finished look is earthy and filled with texture.

For decorating the walls of a child’s room, consider installing a chair rail and then painting the area below it with chalkboard paint. Chalkboard paint can be purchased in either black or green, or in other specialty colors if your order it online. You simply paint several coats of it on the wall and then children can draw with chalk directly on the chalkboard surface you have created. It’s tons of fun and looks great too!

For a fun, interesting look, try covering your walls with newspaper. You can either choose pages from your local paper or choose newspaper pages that have special meaning to you. Start by attaching them to the wall using wallpaper paste. Then, for a glossier, finished look seal over them with a clear paint to help protect the surface.

You can do a similar process using squares or sheets of fabric. Just attach the fabric to the wall with glue or paste and allow it to dry. This is a great way to bring texture and color into a room. Be sure that you only use this technique in rooms where the walls won’t get too dirty, though, since the fabric covering on the walls could be difficult to clean.

Use your imagination and you’ll be sure to come up with lots of great ideas of your own for creative wall coverings. Just be sure to choose something you love and that matches with your personality and decor and you will create a space where you enjoy spending time and are proud to call home.
