Cheap Momma and the Book Clubs

I have a confession to make. Its something I feel you, my loyal readers, have a right to know. I am a nerd. No, no, don’t try to deny it. It’s true. I’m woman enough to admit it. But even though I may have my nerd-like tendencies, I’m definitely not your textbook geek. I mean, sure I wear glasses and I’m on a first name basis with the county librarians. But just because I throw around a few big words and I have my own regularly update blog it doesn’t make me a full-blown nerd, right? No seriously, does it?

Well at the risk of totally tarnishing my super cool reputation I’ll let you in on another little secret. I’ve always wanted to be in a book club. No, not the buy five books get another five free kind of book club. The kind where you, ya know, read books.

In my experience there are two types of book clubs. Well call the first type the Smarty Smartenheimer Book Club. Yep, that is one of those “big words” I was talking about earlier. So, anyhow, this is how it plays out in the SSBC… Each member, all of whom are super education, high class, literary types, picks a book. Not just any book, but the book most likely to make a good impression. You know what I’m talking about. The book most likely to make all the other members realize how super intelligent they really are. So the super book is chosen, read, and then comes the fun part. Each member talks about how they loved/hated the book and gives a handful of literary, high class reasons why.

Now, I only knock the Smarty Smartenheimer Book Club because they totally rejected my request for membership. All twelve times I submitted it. But seriously, the second type of club is a little more my style.

Well call it the Cover Looked Cool Book Club. The CLCBC is slightly more laid back. The members are nerdy enough to enjoy mass amounts of reading and discussing, but not quite in the same league as the SSBC members. This is the type of book club where you talk about how you loved the character because you sort of pictured him to look like Hugh Jackman. The women in this club are your BFFs so while you will certainly discuss the monthly selection; you will also spend a good portion of book club discussing whose husband slept on the couch and whose baby spit up on the teller at the bank.

That is why I’m officially a member of the CLCBC. Okay we don’t actually call ourselves that, but you know what I mean. My book club dreams have all come true and I’m here to tell you that yours can to. Long live the book club.
