Celebrate Your Child’s Baptism

Your child has just made the absolute best decision of his entire life—-he has accepted Christ as his savior and he is going to be baptized! As a parent, this should be a moment of extreme celebration. Baptisms, however, aren’t really celebrated all that much. Maybe a few family members will attend the Baptism and possibly have a nice dinner afterwards. The average birthday party is far more exciting than the celebration that goes along with the typical baptism. Baptisms should be celebrated! Here are some ideas for how to celebrate your child’s baptism.

First of all, talk with your child before the baptism about how important the decision she just made is. Let her know how proud and happy you are that she made this decision. Get her excited about the baptism day. Your child should realize just what an important day this is and look forward to it just as she would any other exciting event, holiday, or party.

Next, be sure to invite as many friends and family members as possible to witness the baptism. True, the real joy comes from the decision itself, not the physical baptism, however, the public profession of baptism is a way to tell the world, and that means especially friends and family, the good news! Do your best to make sure all of the important people in your lives are in attendance for the baptism ceremony. The attendance of friends and family will let your child know what an important event baptism really is.

Finally, make the day a huge celebration. Plan an incredible party for after the church service in which the baptism is performed. Have food and fun and fellowship. Gifts can be optional of course, but a few gifts for your child will make her baptism day even more special. Have a congratulatory decorated cake to enjoy. You may choose to go out somewhere to eat, or just enjoy food at home with your guests. Decorate the house with streamers and balloons, just as you would for any other party. Let your child know just what a celebration baptism should be!

We spend so much time celebrating occasions that really aren’t important in the grand scheme of things, but somehow allow something so important as a baptism to slip on by, virtually unnoticed. When your child accepts Jesus and chooses to be baptized, make sure you show him just how important this decision is by throwing a huge party to celebrate the life-changing event.
