Career Paths in Business Management

Career paths in business management can be wide-ranging, with opportunities available in almost every industry. It takes all types of personalities and educational backgrounds to fill management positions, ranging from supervisory, all the way to CEO positions within Fortune 500 companies. From restaurants to retail, and accounting to waste removal, almost every sector of industry offers a variety of business management jobs and careers.

HospitalityRestaurants and especially hotels are regularly in need of managers. From food and beverage and facilities managers to housekeeping and public space supervisors, there is a lengthy list of both upper and lower level management positions in the hospitality industry that often need to be filled.

Financial – Lately it is obvious that the financial industry is certainly in need of good business management, especially in its upper-echelons. Careers in management can be good here if you’re willing to take the heat if things go bad. Office managers, financial managers, and account managers, are all good places to start if you are interested in a career in financial management.

Technology – While it might not seem like a big area for management, somebody has to keep all those tech geeks off the computer games and focused on the job at hand. The faster technology expands, the more employees are needed to support its services and infrastructure, and those employees have to be managed.

Retail/consumer – Working as a retail manager or as a manager of a grocery or discount store is another great option in business management careers. You might not believe it, but you can make some serious cash running a grocery store or home supply store, although there can be quite a bit of responsibility involved.

Healthcare – Management careers in the healthcare industry have recently been growing in leaps and bounds. With many baby boomers already in or nearing retirement, this area of management appears likely to continue to be a hotbed for new, existing, and expanding careers paths.

Operations – While not for the faint of heart or weak of mind, management roles in manufacturing and construction can make great career paths. Careers in operations management can focus on many areas, including production and supply methodology, cost reduction and containment, project management, time and scheduling costs, as well as many other factors affecting the creation of products, buildings, or infrastructure.

Criminal Justice – It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you mention management, but with the criminal justice field being one of the fastest growing industries, they need managers too. Often their management staff goes by the title of sergeant, lieutenant or captain though. Remember, prisons, police stations, and private security services all still have to be management by people, it doesn’t just happen on its own.

Military – As with the criminal justice field, this is not a typical area that comes to mind when considering management career paths. Commanders, officers, managers, whatever you want to call them, they are all there to motivate, organize, and keep things flowing smoothly. The career path of a military professional can lead to good pay, early retirement, and great benefits.
