Buyer’s Guide to Mini & Microcassette Recorders

Although they cost more than most traditional cassette recorders and can’t play regular-size tapes, microcassette recorders are compact and require fewer batteries. Despite their small size, the tapes can hold as much as 90 minutes of audio, depending upon the tape model.

Many microcassette recorders only need two “AA” batteries, unlike standard-size units which usually need 6 “AA”, 4 “C”, or 4 “D” batteries. Some have a DC power jack, allowing the use of a power adapter to eliminate battery consumption.

The micro cassette tapes are relatively expensive (usually about $7-9 for two tapes, depending upon the brand, length, and where they are purchased), so units which are sold with one or more tapes included should be considered. Blank tapes are made by Realistic, Phillips, Certron, Panasonic, and other brands. It is often substantially cheaper (per unit) to buy a larger quantity of tapes than one or two.

Additional features offered by many of the mini/micro recorders include voice activation and multiple speeds. Microcassette recorders generally offer more features than traditional pocket cassette players and recorders. The Sony M-2000 is a large microcassette recorder with some features usually not found on smaller units.

Although the terms “mini cassette” and “micro cassette” are sometimes used interchangeably, keep in mind that some pocket-size cassette players which use standard-size tapes may be advertised as “mini”, so you should be sure to determine that they are the correct type, especially when shopping online.

Mini and micro cassette recorders are made by a variety of brands, including Sony, Olympus, Memorex, and others. They can be purchased at online shopping websites, internet auctions, department stores and Radio Shack franchises.

Microcassette recorders can be purchased (including shipping) for as little as $10 on eBay. They are more expensive than this at stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, but purchasing one at a store does offer the advantage of being able to return it easily, and eliminates the possibility of damage in shipping.

Keeping these factors in mind, you should be able to find a microcassette recorder which meets your needs at a reasonable price.
