Best Model Train Sets for Children

When I was a kid I loved my model train set. The H0 scale train set could fit on a table or more permanent piece of plywood and could be taken down and placed anywhere. The only problem I had with my model train layout when I was younger was keeping it clean.

Model trains come in all shapes and sizes. There are also many manufacturers of different landscapes, tracks, trains, and kits to make. If you concentrate on one gauge or size, if you purchase the same size gauge each manufacturer will conform to the proper size standard whether you buy Lionel or Bachmann trains.

Different gauges of trains will have more and more detail depending upon the size. N gauge is really too small in my opinion but if you have limited space they are great to have. However many N gauge trains are more expensive. H0 (that’s H and zero, not the letter O) trains are fantastic because they are just the right size for smaller hands and are just inexpensive enough to be budget friendly. 0 gauge is the largest of the three and will be more expensive due to more materials being used. The advantage to 0 gauge trains is that youngsters will love the larger details of the trains as they go by. Here are my suggestions for the best H0 trains to buy for children who love moving models.

Basic

Bachmann has great starter sets for H0 gauge model trains. If you really want to kick start your preschooler’s imagination they manufacture Thomas the Tank Engine scale model trains that really run on electric track.

If you want to get a train set, there are 32 choices for basic sets including a Christmas train perfect for under the tree. There is also a Thomas the Tank Engine set to get you started. If you want to custom make a set you can buy locomotives, cars, and cabooses separately. Bachmann is sold all over America and is a great place to start your romance with the rails.

Advanced

If you want to add a little more control to your basic model train layout you should probably start with a power control device. Many basic sets come with an on or off switch or barely any speed control with a simple dial.

The Tech 4 MRC 220 is a simple looking throttle that can be used for kids around age ten and up for easy switching controls and acceleration/deceleration. The large knob is easy to turn and works great for any size gauge.

Higher End

Maerklin is perhaps the most high tech and advanced model maker for trains and is a favorite in Europe. In business for more than 150 years, Maerklin was an innovator in designing easy-to-use tracks for H0 scale and uses digital connections through a nearly invisible third rail in a track that is very easy to assemble.

Despite filing for bankruptcy in 2009, Maerklin still continues to sell model trains that impress both collectors and hobbyists. As with most good train hobbyists there are complete sets you can purchase. There aren’t many dealers in the United States that sell Maerklin (or Marklin) trains but they are well worth it.
