Best Careers for the 2010 College Graduate

College students that are planning on graduating and entering into the workforce in 2010 should be expecting to hit the pavement hard. The job market in this economy has not been at its best, but there is hope for the recent college graduate at the end of the tunnel.

Michael Farr and Laurence Shatkin, authors of the-recently-updated 200 Best Jobs for College Graduates have stated that the best career choice for the recent college graduate is the title of Network Systems and Data Communications Specialist, if you have the training background in it. The average starting salary is $40,100. Farr and Shatkin also predict that there will be over 30 thousand job openings in this field.

The second career on the list is the Sales Agent/Financial Services Agent. This career has an excellent outlook because the older generation is finding it harder to find long-term financial security in this economy. The average starting salary for a college graduate that is entering into this field is just over $30,000.

The other top 10 Career choices include:

3. Sales Agent in Securities and Commodities (most of the salary coming from commission), they sell stocks and bonds to investors,

4. Market Research Analyst (Salary of $33,310), obtain data and information that would be provided to companies to assist with the decisions of pricing, design, distribution and promotion of products and/or services,

5. Public Relations Specialist ($29,580) manage a organizations’ media, consumer relations, government relations, and community through forming bonding relationships that will help the company to grow,

6. Cost Estimator ($32,470) develop the cost/budget information that business owners need to make a bid on a contract or figuring out the profitability of the project in the construction and manufacturing sector,

7. Educational, Vocational, or School Counselors ($28,430) provide individuals and groups with career information and advice,

8. Actuaries ($48,750) provide estimations for the likely costs of loss of property, illness, sickness, death, and other factors. Actuaries usually work for insurance and financial institutions,

9. Paralegal (Legal Assistant) ($28,360) provide support to attorneys in preparation of legal documents. Assist with the legal research and investigation for cases. Keep track of client files, as well as, provide administrative support to the attorneys,

10. Computer Support Specialist ($25,950) provide technical support including assistance and advice to customers for problems with hardware, software, and entire systems.

Each career has a promising outlook for increased jobs and growth potential. College students should research the fields that they want to get into, but do not close a door of opportunity into another field.

Depending on your degree and your skills alone will not get you the job. You have to be willing and ready to step out of the box. Start networking with individuals that are already employed. The field that you have your degree in may not necessarily be the career that you work in.

I graduated with my B.S. degree in 2008 in Communications and Marketing. After I graduated, I went to Platt College to obtain a degree in Paralegal Studies. The Legal system is very interesting to me, and I am better equipped to apply what I have learned at Platt College with my undergraduate degree in finding a suitable career in the Legal field as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal http://www.plattcollege.edu/programs-and-courses/paralegal/.
