Allergic Living Magazine

If you search online or at the magazine rack in your local grocery or department store, you will notice there aren’t many, if any, magazines covering food allergies, environmental allergies, and asthma. I performed a search through Google using such criteria and discovered the Canadian magazine Allergic Living. Though the magazine is Canadian, it still houses useful information for those of us living in other countries.

Allergic Living includes sections such as “Allergy News” which details recent updates in allergy research and laws; sports profiles about athletes with allergies and/or asthma and how they manage their conditions and enjoy their lives to the fullest; “Living Gluten-Free” which is written for those with Celiac Disease, those allergic to gluten and for those with lesser gluten intolerance and sensitivity. “The Gluten-Free Girl” falls under the same section and is written by Shauna James Ahern, a woman who knows what it is like to struggle with the negative effects of gluten and who found healing by eating a gluten-free diet.

Food allergies are on the rise and if you are someone who suffers from these allergies, the recipe section in Allergic Living will help you avoid the top eight allergens such as milk, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, eggs and wheat. The food section also includes and “Ask the Dietician” column to answer any of your food related questions.

Other columns of interest are: “Ask the Allergists” (for any allergy/asthma related questions), “Hot Topics”, “Travel Diary” (family stories on how to manage allergies and asthma while traveling), “Natural Beauty” (talks of earth-friendly ingredients for your skin) and “Ask the Dermatologist” (for any skin related questions). These are just a handful of topics covered in Allergic Living.

The magazine even accepts submissions from its readers who have allergies and who would like to share their story, and in turn, encourages others with their words.

Allergic Living has helped me become aware of allergies and asthma in seeing how prevalent they are in our society. Allergies and gluten sensitivity run on both my husband’s and my side of the family. This means my daughter has an increased risk of having allergies, asthma and gluten sensitivity. With Allergic Living, I can stay up to date with information related to these conditions and help my family live better, more informed lives than without the magazine.

The magazine is released every three months, or quarterly, and sells for $5.95 an issue.

Allergic Living is also online with a website containing articles, subscription information, resources, links, podcasts, contact information, and a forum where you can talk about all things related to allergies and asthma. The forum is a great place for those with allergies and/or asthma who are looking for support and answers to questions. To visit the website go to: http://www.allergicliving.com/
