Activities for Fall and Winter in Wichita, Kansas

Looking for something to do in the fall and winter in Wichita, KS? I have several ideas for you that my family and I love to do.

First, we love to go to museums and Wichita has a lot of them.

The Firefighter’s museum is located at 1300 S Broadway in Wichita, KS. It has a lot of old firefighting tools and equipment. They also have a memorial that is outside and can be viewed any time of day or night 365 days a year.

Visiting the firefighter’s museum and possibly setting up an appointment to visit one of many fire stations through out the city is a great way to educate your little ones about fire safety. Fall and winter are the most common times of year for fires to start, so it will be great to teach your children about fire safety or refresh their memories on fire safety during this time.

After you have visited the firefighter’s museum and a working fire station, head over to Engine House Hobbies for great train toys!! You can locate Engine House Hobbies at 2718 E Blvd Plz in Wichita, KS.

We also have a great museum that has a little bit of everything. Museum of World Treasures located at 835 E 1st Street N in Wichita, Ks. There is so much in here to see that it will take a day or more of browsing. They have something for everyone from dinosaurs and mummies to sports, presidents and queen and kings.

We are known as the aviation capital of the world and we have a great aviation museum you should visit at 3350 George Washington Blvd (GWB) in Wichita, Ks. They have planes from every era. They are active in restoring great planes and helicopters. Check them out online at http://www.kansasaviationmuseum.org/m_moverview.php.

Be sure and visit the Keeper of the Plains downtown. During the evening you will be memorized by a ring of fire surrounding this 44 ft tall statue. The new construction they’ve done to the area has made this statue even better to view.

You can also view the Keeper of the Plains from inside Exploration Place. Exploration Place is a great place to take children of all ages! They have several hands on exhibits including leaf rubbings, a tornado, and digging for dinosaur bones! Visit them online at www.exploration.org .

Other great activities would be to visit the nature centers around Wichita, Kansas. Great Plains Nature Center at 29th street and Woodlawn has several programs for children to do during the week and great nature trails. Visit them online at www.gpnc.org .

The Sedgwick County zoo is another great place to visit during the fall and winter. The animals are more active, the crowds are less and the heat and humidity is down. The zoo is growing and adding more displays every couple of years so if you haven’t been to see the penguins or tigers, fall would be a great time to visit them. www.scz.org.
