Acid Reflux: Is the Cure Antacids or Apple Cider Vinegar?

There is an old saying in English, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. While it may seem like this saying is an invention of a wise soul, probably to make little kids eat apples, this is actually backed up by scientific proof.

Long ago when doctors and hospitals were a rarity, everyone depended on grandmother’s home made remedies for all types of minor illnesses. These remedies have been passed down through generations and still find a place in a lot of homes. These home remedies have sometimes made all the difference in many a life and death situations.

Let’s look at what apple cider vinegar can do. To start of, it can cure many physical problems of the skin like allergies, acne and candida to name a few and some really painful problems like arthritis, gout and acid reflux.

Acid reflux for example is a condition found in many people. In medical parlance, this condition is referred to as GERD or Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease. This ailment is caused when acids present in the stomach gets into the food pipe or the esophagus causing severe burning sensation. The stomach is home to many acids like pepsin, which aids in the digestion of protein. When pepsin and other acids get into the food pipe it creates an uncomfortable burning sensation, sometimes referred to as heartburn. This condition is attributed to the malfunctioning of the lower sphincter of the esophagus.

Bad eating habits and drinking can cause temporary heartburn but if this sensation persists over a period of time, then it is advisable to get in touch with a medical professional.

Getting in touch with a doctor at an early stage of the disease will help in preventing permanent damage to the linings of the inner walls your esophagus from acid reflux. Getting treated at the right time will go a long way in preventing permanent damage and also help in the recurrence of this condition.

Antacids have always been used to treat acid reflux but the problem here is that, antacids produce more acids to contain heartburn and the uncomfortable burning feeling comes back, once the effect of the antacid wears off. This is one reason why many people today reject antacids as a solution to acid reflux.

Apple cider vinegar seems to be the people’s choice these days, as this is not only very effective in curing acid reflux, it is also a safe solution with no negative side effects at all. However, as with all natural remedies, it takes a longer time than the antacids to cure the problem.

Apple cider vinegar is a cheap solution too. If you don’t find it in your kitchen, you can get it from any supermarket and it will cost you less than five dollars per bottle. Fro general health, drinking two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar is enough but if you are suffering from acid reflux then a stronger mixture is recommended.

The side effects of drinking apple cider vinegar are negligible and only concerns the taste of the product and it is nothing compared to the benefits of drinking it.

Whatever your choice of apple cider vinegar is, it is bound to be a miracle cure for your acid reflux problem. Apple cider vinegar is ample proof to the truth in the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”.
