A Guide to Casino Gambling in Michigan

Do you enjoy the thrill of casino gambling? It’s not for everyone, but if it’s fun for you, head to Michigan for some great casinos! Michigan casinos can be found in the cities and in the woods. No matter where you are in the state, casino gambling is not too far away.

Native American tribes throughout the state of Michigan own and operate 18 casinos in both the upper and lower peninsulas. Since Native American tribes are sovereign nations neither the State of Michigan nor the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has any regulatory authority over tribal casinos. All of these Native American casinos all regulated by the National Indian Gaming Commission and/or the government of the tribal community.

Twelve federally recognized Indian tribes operate 19 casinos in Michigan. Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988. This permits federally recognized Indian tribes to conduct gaming activities.

There are three licensed casinos in Detroit that the Michigan Gaming Control Board has authority to license, regulate, and control. The casino revenue from these three casinos is distributed to K-12 public education in Michigan. It is also used for capital improvement, youth programs, and tax relief in the City of Detroit.

I enjoy casino gambling once in awhile, but I’m not a big spender by any means. I will take a twenty dollar bill into a casino – that’s my limit! But there are many people who have gambling addictions. For those with gambling problems, Michigan has help available from the Michigan Bureau of Substance Abuse & Addiction. Michigan residents can get help through the 24-hour Michigan Problem Gambling Help-line at 1-800-270-7117, prevention programs, and treatment programs. Counselors provide immediate, confidential help to those who call for help.
