5 Funniest Episodes of ‘Supernatural’

Although wizards, vampires and werewolves are trendy themes for film and television, “Supernatural” is one-of-a-kind with its offbeat humor. Even in the face of an impending apocalypse, the show always delivers at least a few comedic moments. Often, this happens through Dean’s suffering or discomfort. In no particular order, these five episodes are the funniest of the show’s six seasons.

Season 5 – “Changing Channels”
Much like the John Ritter film “Stay Tuned,” this episode of “Supernatural” has the Winchester brothers trapped in TV land. It begins with a cheesy opening theme song fit for the TGIF lineup on ABC during the 1990s. The duo must endure 24 hours in situations parodying television commercials and hit shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “C.S.I.: Miami” and “Knight Rider.” Sam’s STD commercial and Dean’s obvious man crush are definite highlights.

Season 4 – “Yellow Fever”
Dean develops a growing sense of fear when he and Sam investigate deaths seemingly caused by fright. Sam takes the lead in solving the case with Bobby while Dean cowers in fear and hallucinates. Dean usually has plenty of great one-liners and this episode has some of the best simple laughs thanks to him. Dean volunteering to man the flashlight is priceless.

Season 2 – “Tall Tales”
This story unfolds through flashbacks with Sam and Dean each telling his version of events to Bobby. Dean’s flashbacks show Sam as a sentimental nag and Sam presents Dean as a hungry slob, but the romantic alien abduction is by far the funniest part.

Season 5 – “The Real Ghostbusters”
Becky tricks Sam and Dean into attending a “Supernatural” convention full of LARPers. Much to the annoyance of the hunters, many of the fans play intense versions of Sam and Dean based on the book series. The jokes come at the expense of superfans, the actors and the show itself, but it works.

Season 3 – “Mystery Spot”
Despite the grim reality of Dean’s impending death, this episode is full of comic relief. Like Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day,” Sam keeps reliving the same day. Morning after morning, he wakes to Asia’s “Heat of the Moment” playing on the alarm clock. And, day after repetitive day, Dean meets his untimely demise in a different way. His many death scenes and the surprising causes, from a funny taco to a slippery shower, provide ongoing laughs.
