Wondee Siam II in Hell’s Kitchen

There are many wonderful Thai restaurants in New York City but there is only one Wondee Siam II. Located in the civilized section of Hell’s Kitchen, Wondee Siam II is a great place to get soups, appetizers, and even full on dinner at rock bottom prices. Another fabulous event about the Wondee Siam II in Manhattan is their lunch menu which is available weekdays from 11 – 3 and has more than a dozen choices, with your choice of beef, chicken, pork, or vegetarian at one rate (shrimp and squid for a dollar more).

Some of the best things to get at a place like Wondee is a smattering of their smaller items. The appetizer menu at Wondee Siam II includes fried tofu, sate, basil rolls, steamed vegetable dumplings, Thai spring rolls, and their “curry puff” which is puff pastry filled with ground chicken, sweet potato, curry powder and spices served with cucumber relish among many others.

The soups at Wondee Siam II include seaweed soup, woon sen soup (clear broth, ground chicken, bean thread, shitake mushroom, scallion, and celery) as well as their tom yum and tom ka soups with chicken, seafood, or shrimp.

Wondee Siam II also has salads, noodles, and fried rice. One of my favorite fried rice’s at Wondee Siam II is their pineapple fried rice which has jasmine rice, stir fried with choice of meat, pineapple, cashew nut, egg tomato, and scallion. The fried rice dishes are huge and are a meal unto their own. Their Pad Thai noodle dishes are also quite good.

But really the deal at Wondee Siam II is the meals. Their entrees are excellent; lemon grass chicken is an excellent entrée which is barbecued chicken breast marinated with yellow curry powder, Thai pepper lemon grass and garlic. Another favorite among the entrees at Wondee Siam II is their Thai pork chop which is grilled marinated tender filet steak which is served with their Wondee special spicy sauce and sticky rice.

All in all the selection at Wondee Siam may appear to be a bit out of step with other rates you’ve seen in the neighborhood; however it’s Wondee Siam’s longstanding history in the neighborhood which enables them to offer such discounted rates. So if you’re looking for a great meal the next time you’re in Manhattan, that’s not a burger and fries, but still won’t set you back too far, check out Wondee Siam II!
