Why You Should Visit Presque Isle State Park

Presque Isle is a National Natural Landmark that stretches 32,000 acres that arches into Lake Erie and can be reached PA Route 832 or by boat. Pennsylvania’s only seashore, Presque Isle is the perfect location for many activities such as, camping, boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking. With over seven miles of beaches, over three hundred bird species, and a known historical site to the War of 1812, this park has something for everyone. I personally choose this park for camping. The best time for camping would be June through September. The water is always crisp and full of life. You can bring your own camping equipment and rent an inexpensive spot on the beach, as close as you want it, for an inexpensive price. You can also rent a cabin and or purchase your own camping equipment. I personally enjoy camping on the beach about fifty feet away from the shore.

Depending on weather conditions, Lake Erie can give you quite a show. I have been camping at a time when it was extremely windy where the tides rose and fell so violently that they almost reached my tent. The sound and view was amazing. I have also been there when severe thunderstorms sweep through causing water spouts to form over the Lake, not to mention a perfect front row seat to the most beautiful lightning show. Not only can you observe the wrath of Mother Nature, but at Presque Isle, you can view the most breathtaking. The sunsets over Lake Erie are a sight that you can not miss. The sun always looks like a ball of fire in a colorfully lit sky retreating gracefully into the sparkling tides of the lake.
The white sandy beaches are magical as well, always guarded by life guards, and extremely perfect for building sand castles. The clear waters are perfect for swimming and have earned a place in the nation’s “Top 100 Swimming Holes”. But please make sure to check the current beach conditions and water quality before jumping in. One of the activities that I always enjoyed was wading in the shallow waters and checking out the different types of rocks that wash in. You will be amazed at the gorgeous rock formations and brilliant colors that you can find. If you take a look out into the sparkling, clear waters, you will see many a boats out there.

Presque Isle is very popular for its boating and its fishing. Bass, walleye, northern pike, and crappie are all found in Presque Isle’s Bay and the park’s ponds, piers, and bays. However most of these regions require a Lake Erie fishing permit. If you’re not up for fishing and you want to go boating, but forgot your boat, no problem. A variety of boats that are powered or un-powered are available, as well as canoes can be rented. Or you can choose to take a ride on one of the great lakes vessel, “Lady Kate” for a narrative tour or a sunset cruise. If you decide to take this tour or cruise you do have to call to make reservations. Historic lighthouses also grace this sand peninsula. In 1872, Presque Isle Lighthouse was built and is still in operation, but is not open to visitors. Presque Isle North Pierhead Lighthouse on the eastern tip of the peninsula is open to the pubic and has been shining since 1858.

After all of these water activities, you’ll be getting pretty hungry. The best place to eat is only right across the road from Presque Isle Campgrounds. Academy Diner is a lot of great food along with a 50’s theme. Classic cars are parked around this diner with old fashioned gas pumps. Inside there is still the 50’s theme with a classic jukebox with all the oldies but goodies available to soothe the ears. Located at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park is an amusement park that will consume you and your family for hours or days at a time. Waldameer Park and Water World is full of rides, water slides, live shows, arcades, games, and much more. There is no fee to enter the park and all parking is free, however if you want to get the most for you money…for only $20 a person you can enter both parks all day long.

Presque Isle is simple stated as the best, most relaxed and inexpensive family vacation that you can have. If you don’t want to spend barely any money then all you really need for a beautiful, relaxed time, is a tent, a sleeping bag, and sun block. Presque Isle will take care of the rest.
