What to Wear to an Informal Interview

Informal and job interview seem to be oxymorons, as I could not think of anything that contradicted each other more. Job interviews are one of the more formal moments in your life and in your career. The day that I realized I was going to an informal job interview I had absolutely no idea what to wear so I went with the one rule that I knew would be a success. Always dress more formal than casual – even at a casual job interview.

There is a time and a place for sandals, flip-flops, running shoes and scuffed shoes. A job interview – even an informal job interview is not one of the times for these kinds of shoes. An informal job interview means casual shoes; perhaps loafers, or oxford shoes for men. Perhaps pumps, flats, or boots for women for appropriate shoe choices.

What should a man wear to an informal job interview? In some cases experts feel that jeans are appropriate is matched accordingly with a tucked in button-down shirt, and a jacket without a tie. The shoes should be casual, as mentioned above. Hair, fingernails and teeth should be well groomed. The jeans are very casual, but matching with the jacket gives the allure of professionalism and adds that extra touch of confidence during the stages of first impression. The suit has become the uniform for a job interview for a man – and there are not often too many choices to switch it up. An informal job interview is the same, the dress code still exists. Even in an informal interview many experts feel that a jacket is mandatory to maintain that sense of professionalism. For this one however, this is the one case when men can forego the tie.

For women – the choices are endless. A woman could choose to pair a skirt with a button-down shirt, and a cardigan or a twin set. She could also choose to wear pants, with a jacket and a shirt or even a casual dress with a cardigan. It is important that when attending a job interview that the skirt be the appropriate length. Formal or informal – mini skirts should be avoided when going to a job interview. Women have the option of pairing a cardigan, a jacket or even a shawl or wrap with an informal job interview. A short jacket would be appropriate that matches, or at least compliments the pants that are being worn with the outfit. Shoes should be of minimal height for an informal job interview. Flat or low boots, or flat shoes are appropriate during the informal interview.

It is important to keep in mind that an informal job interview is still a job interview. One must look their best while presenting themselves to their new employee. First impressions make the largest impression – and you will want yours to be memorable in a pleasant way. Hair should be kept conservative, styles and void of many colors. Jewelry should be kept minimal as well and low key for the informal interview. Follow these tips, and you will look your best! While you are looking your best, you will be at your best.
