What is a Political Advisor and What Does a Political Advisor Do?

When I worked as a political advisor for a company I was constantly asked about what I did, and about why I was needed. Being a political advisor for a company is a very interesting career choice for anyone who knows politics and business.

What Does A Political Advisor Do?

A political advisor watches the political market and advises a company as to what moves should be made. It is the job of the political advisor to pay attention to who the company’s allies and enemies are in the local, state, and national political arenas.

If a company deals with a union, it is the job of the political advisor to pay attention to the issues between the union and the company. He or she will advise the company as to what issues should be pursued, and which ones should be ignored for the time being.

What Kinds of Companies Need a Political Advisor?

First off, any company that deals with the government on any significant level needs a political advisor. Any company that wants to deal with the government on any significant level will need a political advisor.

Any company that has a large union presence will need to hire a political advisor. A company that is a contractor for a company that has a large union presence should also have a political advisor.

What Do I Need To Be a Political Advisor?

Suggested degrees would include political science and/or business. Most companies will prefer accelerated degrees in these fields, and some level of experience of political advisement. You will also need some kind of experience in the field in which you wish to advise for.

If you are going to advise a company that has a union, experience in contractual law is a must. There are some colleges that will grant degrees in contractual law specialty under a business law degree.

How Do I Gain Experience?

The best way is to contact a company and ask to speak to their political advisor (if they have one). Explain to the person that you are trying to break into the field and see if they know of any company that is looking for someone new for the field. Many political advisors from different companies talk about current issues on a regular basis, so many will know where the companies are that are hiring.

How High Up in the Government Can a Political Advisor Reach?

That will depend on the issue that is being pushed, and what company the political advisor is working for. I worked for a company that did contractual work for the auto industry, and was in regular contact with U.S. Senators, and the heads of the UAW.

Being a political advisor is an interesting job to have. While being very challenging, it can also be very demanding. There are many that enter the field, but few that have the skills to keep them going for long.
