Weather Lesson Plans

Weather Lesson Plans.

Perfect weather lesson plans for 3-8. Children will have fun and learn about weather. I will include ways to adjust some of the plans for older children as well.

What’s the weather?

Print off a free weather printable from http://www.freeprintablecoloringpages.net/category/Weather.

Hand each student two printable of the same weather element. Different children should have different elements. One child will have 2 sheets with the same sun pictures on them; another child will have two sheets with the same rain pictures on them, and so on.

Let the children color their weather elements however they want.

Cut the weather elements out and punch two holes in each sheet of paper.

Using yarn tie the two sheets together.

Drape the weather element over the child’s head so it is worn like armor. For the example the child with the sun will have a sun on their chest and a sun on their back.

Now teach the children about their weather element. You can create your own work sheets at http://www.toolsforeducators.com/weather.php or you can print out already made ones at http://www.enchantedlearning.com/themes/weather.shtml. This site also has nursery rhymes you can sing and teach the children about weather.

Once the children have learned about their element play a weather game. The teacher will be the forecaster. You should call out a weather element, such as “Today there is a chance for rain” and have the child that had rain come up and tell the class what they know about rain. If more than one child has the same element they can tell different information about the element or they can say the same thing, repetitive learning is a great way to learn.

Print off activity sheets for the kids to all fill out from

http://www.teachervision.fen.com/weather/printable/53218.html this site has something for kids of all ages.

You can also find flash cards for children at http://flashcardplazza.com/index.php/October/Free-Weather-Flashcard.html .

Next is an activity I call Being a Weatherman.

Print off a blank calendar month sheet. Divide each day in half diagonally.

Give each child the blank sheet.

Explain to the children that they are going to be weather forecasters for the rest of the month (or week).

Have the children look out the window. Is it sunny? Raining? Cloudy? Snowing? If you have weather stickers you can have the child place the picture that represents the weather outside on the correct day of the month. Then tell them what the temperature is outside and have them write that on the day also.

Now have the children guess (predict) the weather for the next day. Do they think it will still be sunny or will it snow? Will the temperature be warmer or colder? Have them draw a picture of what they predict the next day will be in the upper half of the day that you’ve divided at an angle. Then next day, look outside, observe the weather and place the correct sticker on the bottom half of the day under their predictions. By the end of the week are they doing better at predicting the weather? How about the end of the month?

For older kids you can make this assignment more elaborate by explaining to them the more scientific elements of predicting weather. Use weather radars from http://www.weather.com/ , http://weather.weatherbug.com/ , and http://www.wunderground.com/ .
