Top Ten Best Songs by Gyptian

Gyptian is one of my favorite reggae singers. Gyptian is from St. Andrew, Jamaica and has a soft soothing voice that one can’t help but relax to. His given name is Windell Beneto Edwards. He grew up singing in his mom’s Adventist church choir, as well as listening to his father’s Rastafarian music. Listening to his tunes, you can feel a good blend of both sounds, which is what drew me to this singer the moment I heard him.

Christian or church music and reggae are two of my favorite genres, so to combine the sounds of both was great, not to mention the fact that he’s got the style and voice to accomplish it well. I can also hear a hint of R&B; or Soul in some of his music. Gyptian got his name for his Egyptian style of tying his t-shirt to his head and twisting his beard in the style of Egyptian pharoahs. Some of his songs are sung in English and some are sung in Rastafarian Patois. Some consist of both. His lyrics are generally about love, peace, and helping others.

Here are what I feel are the top ten best Gyptian songs, in no particular order. They are all great for different reasons, so an order of greatness would be too hard to choose, except in the case of my number one pick

Take Me Higher” is my all-time favorite Gyptian song. It’s about how with the Heavenly Father, we can have peace and rise above. This song has great symbolism for me, as I feel that only the Father above can bring total peace and He can also help me to rise above anything, as He does regularly. These meaningful lyrics, combined with Gyptian’s amazingly soothing sound and the lovely accompaniment in this song make for an exceptional piece of music.

Serious Times” is a Gyptian song that talks about the state of the world. When I am thinking about things that are going on in the world, this is the music I want playing in the background. The lyrics to this song are universal to most countries, describing that violence and crime are too high. The words sung by Gyptian’s clear and strong voice call for people to come together and be happy, rather than resorting to crime.

Mama, Don’t Cry” is a tribute to Gyptian’s mother. It is easy to relate to this song, even if your memories are not the same as his. I enjoy hearing his heartfelt words to his mother about he feels. He is basically letting her know that everything will be alright. Even though their situation is not the same as mine, I still think of my mom when I hear this song. I believe everyone has one time or another where they may need to tell their parents that everything will be okay.

I Can Feel Your Pain” is not only a great love song, but it gives Gyptian the chance to show off his smooth sounding voice. The beautiful music accompanied by his beautiful voice can take me to another world. It’s a good song to relax to or to listen to with a lover. My husband and I often enjoy this one together.

AIDS” is another one of Gyptian’s serious songs. He discusses the AIDS virus and wonders when there will be a cure. I deeply care for those suffering from serious illnesses like AIDS. Helping others is a big part of who I am, so I can relate to this song, in that I also wish a cure for this disease to come soon for the sake of the many who are infected in this world.

My Fadda Seh” (Translation: My Father Says) speaks of the love the Father above has for all His children on Earth and the love we should have for Him. Being a spiritual person, this song naturally speaks to my heart and soul.

Rise and Live” is a song to inspire people to come together. The message is that peace comes with unity. I also believe this and greatly enjoy these powerful lyrics. Gyptian’s voice is not only beautiful, but I can hear the feeling, in not just this song, but all of his others as well.

No More War” speaks to me because I am a positive person. This song is all about avoiding negativity and loving and respecting one another. With a catchy hook and beautiful verses sung by Gyptian, along with the positive message, this song could appeal to many people.

Is There A Place”,to me, is the perfect song for inspiring young people not to give up. Gyptian talks about crime and how it can easily make young people want to give up. He asks if there exists a place where love can be found and tells youth not to ever give up, that it is possible to make it in life. He urges them to stop harming one another and love instead. Anything that inspires young people is high on my list of favorites.

Rise Up”, like the purpose of “Is There A Place”, is a motivational song to keep young people off the streets. He talks of growing up in the ghetto and how crime is not the way to get out. While I did not grow up in a ghetto, my family did have many down times, as far as income. I can relate to pushing forward, even when times are rough. I also enjoy the fact that Gyptian seeks to inspire the youth.
