Top Five Pet Kennels in Houston, TX

It isn’t always convenient to take your pets with you on vacation or on business trips, so unless you have a friendly neighbor who is willing to assume responsibility, you’ll need to find a place to keep your pets until you return. Following are reviews of the top five pet kennels in Houston, TX based on price, availability, care and treatment.

Rover Oaks Pet Resort
2550 West Bellfort
Houston, TX 77054(713) 662-2119

If for no other reason, Rover Oaks is one of the best pet kennels in Houston because they have a veterinarian on call twenty-four hours a day, which is something every pet owners looks for in a pet kennel. Their regular staff is also trained in basic veterinary care, which is also reassuring. Rover Oaks is a beautiful lakeside establishment with plenty of room for your pets to enjoy what they call “group play”.

Founded by a nationally recognized dog trainer, this pet kennel is clean, orderly and safe for your pet; they require immunization records on all pets and they require their staff to be certified by the American Boarding Kennels Association. Their kennels cost between $18 and $38 per day, and you get a 25% discount if you have a second pet staying in the same kennel; and a 50% discount for your third pet.

Urban Tails1618 Webster
Houston, TX 77003(713) 658-0900

This pet kennel markets itself as a boarding kennel for city dogs. They provide a multitude of services, including: obedience training, “cage-free” sleepovers, day boarding, grooming, pet supplies and more. When you board your pet in their kennel, he or she doesn’t spend the night in a 2X2 cage, but out in the open in a room full of doggy beds, mats, blankets and other furniture. Their staff is always friendly and considerate, and they take great care in selecting the types of animals allowed to stay in their pet kennel.

Urban Tails costs $18/night for “cage-free” sleepovers, which is a fairly low price considering what some of the other kennels cost. Your pets must be caught up on all their shots and will be returned to you fully bathed and groomed, unless you request otherwise.

ABC Pet Resort & Spa
17024 Bamwood
Houston, TX 77090(281) 444-9414

If you’re looking for attentive, professional care for your pet, you might want to take a tour of ABC Pet Resort. They are one of the most efficient pet kennels I have ever used, and they accept both dogs and cats, which is helpful if you have both. All animals are required to have their shots and to be flea-free on arrival. If fleas are found in your pet’s hair, a $25.00 flea bath will be required. Their rates range from $17/day to $40/day (the latter including a suite with a patio) and their Healthy Care Warranty costs $5 extra. You can also sign your pet up for playtimes, which cost $6/session.

Prestonwood Kennels13302 Schroeder Rd.
Houston, TX 77070(281) 890-9090

This pet kennel is not as nice as the previous three, but it is still in the top five because the care is excellent and because they offer a multitude of services depending on the ages, sizes and needs of your pets. Prestonwood accepts both dogs and cats, and they provide a Wellness service, which I recommend for the extra $4. They have a veterinarian on-call, which is definitely a plus in case your pet comes down with something, and they offer both obedience classes and agility classes for those who are interested. Cat rates start at $15/day and dog rates start at $18/day. They have several different types of enclosures, some of which come with indoor/outdoor runs.

Pampered Pet Inn2411 Bissonnet
Houston, TX 77005(713) 522-7387

I have personally never used the Pampered Pet Inn, but I have several friends who swear by it. I’ve never heard anything negative about the service, quality or conditions at Pampered Pet Inn, which definitely bodes well. It is a slightly classier, more elegant pet kennel with dedicated and educated staff. The enclosures are larger than any of the other four pet kennels on this list, though their rates are also significantly higher. Your pets will listen to classical music all night and will be treated to a bath at the end of their stay in mango, eucalyptus or oatmeal shampoo.
