RonDiaz Spiced Rum is a Barbados based rum with spices and natural flavors. The spices are not very robust but the flavor is good enough for most mixed drinks, especially drinks that require alot of ingredients. It has a 30% alcohol content (60 proof) and is sold at most package store retailers for around $8.99 a liter.
4.) Cruzan No. 9 Spiced Rum
Cruzan No. 9 Spiced Rum is one of the newer products in the market. It is imported from the Virgin Islands and featues nine spices including everything from juniper berry to vanilla. The most noticeable spice in No. 9 is the pepper. This spiced rum can be used in mixed drinks as well but is probably better off being used as a sipping rum or just mixed with cola. Cruzan No. 9 has a 40% alcohol content (80 proof) and retails for around $12.99 a 750 ml.
3.) Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
Captain Morgan Spiced rum is THE leader in the spiced rum category. This is mainly due to its huge marketing campaigns, affordability, but mostly it’s easy drinkability. Used in almost all rum and coke’s nationwide it is easily the most recognizable. It is a Puerto Rican spiced rum, and much like RonDiaz, the flavor is good but not over-powering. The more noticeable spices in Captain Morgan are of the sweet, sugary variety. Captain Morgan has a 35% alcohol content (70 proof) and retails for around $17.99 a 750 ml.
2.) Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
“My Work Speaks For Itself” is the slogan for Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum and it is no lie. The first on our list as one of the higher proof spiced rum’s (46% alcohol content, 92 proof), Sailor Jerry’s Spiced rum comes from the Caribbean and also uses spices and natural flavors. The tastiest spice in this liquor, however, is the heavy use of caramel. It gives the rum suprisingly smooth flavor to an obviously stronger spiced rum. The Sailor is good by itself over ice and perfect in cola. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum can be found in most package stores and usually costs about $15.99 a 750 ml.
1.) The Kraken Black Spiced Rum
One of the newest and best spiced rum’s that you probably have not tried is the delicious Kraken Black Spiced Rum. The Kraken is a Caribbean rum that is blended with spices, natural flavors, and caramel. Upon first receiving a sample, the coloring is as dark as coffee and can appear intimidating to most casual rum drinkers. The flavor, however, is tremendous. As smooth and drinkable as any on this list, The Kraken has a dark, rich yet sweet, upfront and finish taste. It is also a high proof rum (47% alcohol content, 94 proof) which translates into getting alot more for alot less as it takes very little rum in any drink to obtain the great flavor.
