Top 3 Free Family Activities in Chicago

Are you a parent looking to fill some hours entertaining the youngsters in Chicago without going broke? As a stay at home mom I have been in that same boat wondering where to find some inexpensive but fun and educational activities. Instead of squeezing in research between your child’s cries of boredom, keep reading to find out the best ways to save money while enjoying some great activities.

Below are my top 3 activities for a wallet-friendly day with your little ones.

#1 Free Music Class at Whole Foods

The Whole Foods superstore in Lincoln Park hosts a free music class every Wednesday and Thursday. Leading the 30 minute class are musicians from Bubbles Academy. They are great with children and sing classics such as “Rain, Rain, Go Away” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. It is also a great way to try out the Bubbles Academy if you are considering enrolling your child, but another advantage to this Whole Foods event is the ability to pick up some items you were needing around the house while your child is in a song induced good mood. #2 Free Stories with The Storybook Mom

The Storybook Mom, Nili Yelin, is well known in Chicago after starting out as a young mom and actress filling some time during the actor’s union strike. She is so good at storytelling that it became a full time gig from word of mouth alone. From personal experience I can tell you this will be an activity your child requests more of. She does many locations throughout Chicago, and most events are free. My favorite place to bring my kid to see her though is the Little Beans Café in Lincoln Park. You can multi-task by having some snacks while the kids socialize. For a list of all her event times and locations, click here.

Location: 1809 W. Webster, Chicago, IL
Time: 10:30am to 11:30am

#3 Free Admissions at the Children’s Museum

A great way to teach your child, get in quality time, and share hours of fun and laughs, is to visit the Chicago Children’s Museum. Every Thursday evening from 5pm to 8pm admission is waived. This is a fantastic activity and a convenient one to have dad meet the family after work. They have exhibits that are tailored to every age including babies and toddlers. Besides being interactive, it is education in disguise at its finest. For more information on their programs, click here.

With my top 3 free activities in Chicago, your kids will be begging you to do them more often, and with the price tag, it is tough to say no.
