Today’s Trail, Tomorrow’s Botanical Gardens

When I first heard about the Ventura Botanical Gardens I was highly skeptical of the ambitious plan to transform the previously underutilized and unappreciated Grant Park into a world class botanical gardens. As a lifelong city resident I have witnessed various derailed attempts at showcasing the natural beauty of the area. The adjacent downtown area has experienced a tremendous turnaround over the last 20 years but that was aggressively pursued by elected officials and residents alike. The idea of a botanical gardens in Ventura was hatched by a group of committed and caring individuals and the recent state of the city’s balance sheet would not allow any financial contributions to this noble effort. At the time I didn’t believe the idea would ever come to fruition. While the actual botanical gardens are still in the planning and fundraising stage, the group behind the gardens gave a sneak peek at what to expect. I recently hiked the group’s first completed project, the stunning Demonstration Trail in Grant Park.

The Demonstration Trail in Grant Park officially opened to hikers on October 20th, 2012 and immediately became a favored attraction of tourists and local residents alike. The trail begins directly behind Ventura’s stately City Hall and is within walking distance of the Ventura pier and the downtown area. The first 1400 feet are ADA accessible enabling the disabled the opportunity to enjoy the city and coastal view points along the way. The trail was constructed using decomposed granite to weather rain and high traffic and offers a stable walking surface. Numerous switchbacks keep the trail’s grade in check along its mile length. Viewing areas jut off the trail imploring trail users to soak up the incredible views of downtown Ventura nestled between mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The Channel Islands are on full display from these viewing areas as well. All ages will enjoy taking a hike up this serene trail.

The thought and research that went into this trail was apparent to me the first time I hiked its mile length. The views, grade of the trail, and location near downtown add to an already exciting downtown scene in Ventura. The Ventura Botanical Gardens should be proud of the work they have accomplished thus far as the city’s residents and visitors now have a truly unique and accessible hiking opportunity.
