Tips to Eliminate Stink Bugs

Residents of the eastern states have been infested with a small creature to the likes of locusts during Biblical times. Attempts have been futile. From sprays to powders and everything else in between, the stink bug will not go away. To understand how to get rid of a stink bug, one must understand what the destructive stink bug is.

The stink bug is a small outdoor bug known for its shield like shape and foul odor when disturbed. The “stink” is a defense mechanism to protect the stink bug from being eaten from natural predators such as birds and lizards. The stink bug usually lives in fields containing some sort of crop. Another location is open fields, gardens, and shrubbery. The typical season for the stink bug is spring to fall. When the temperatures become cooler, the stink bug invades the home. Now the big problems occur.

The question people ask is “how does one rid their home of the destructive stink bug”? Provided will be 5 tips to eliminate the stink bug one and for all.

Tip #1

The first step to the complete elimination of the stink bug is to locate all possible entry points into the home. Survey the home, interior and exterior structures. The smallest cracks will allow the stink bug to invade the home. On the exterior of the home, look for possible entry points for a stink bug such as cracks in siding, foundation, and doors. Also remember to check anything extruding from the home such as utility pipes and water spouts.

Tip #2

Once the entry points have been identified, the next step is to close the point of entry for the stink bug. Use a high quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk to fill in all of the cracks. When using hazardous chemicals caution needs to be applied. Gloves and a mask should be worn.

Prepare the surfaces by first cleaning the area of any residual debris. If the cracks or entry points run into the house, the sealant will need to be applied on the interior as well.

Tip #3

Since the main entry point for the stink bug is the exterior, a spray will need to be applied. When selecting a spray, choose a spray which will not break down in the sunlight. The reason behind a chemical not breaking down in the sunlight is the stink bug is attracted to sunlight. If the chemical has worn off, the stink bug will return. During the peak season, spring through fall, apply the stink bug treatment at least once every week or week and a half.

Tip #4

The last resort would be to call an extermination company who specializes in the elimination of the stink bug. Ensure the company has a proven reputation of eliminating the stink bug and not just open claims of service.

Stick bugs are a nuisance. From invading a home to the smell, a stink bug is a yearlong problem. Utilizing the steps above will have a home free and clear of the menacing stink bug.
