Tips for Shipping Furniture

First of all, there are vast differences between moving furniture, and shipping furniture. Usually in a move, whether near or far, you simply have to think about the logistics of getting your furniture in the truck, packing it to avoid scratches and dust, removing any mirrors, knobs, or legs that are removable, and securing it so it doesn’t shift during transfer. Shipping furniture, leads to a headache of a whole different kind.

Shipping furniture can be a costly procedure. Before the big move, access what furniture you need to keep. Antiques and heirlooms will understandably be included, but reevaluate just what you want to take. Is shipping a dresser with no sentimental value across country, or overseas really that cost effective. Shipping a simple dining room chair across the United States varies in price from $125-$400 depending on it’s route. Selling the furniture and applying it to new pieces is smarter for the pocket book.

For the pieces you absolutely cannot live without, look in the yellow pages or look on line for a professional freight or shipping service. A lot of these companies, if they package the furniture themselves assume responsibility for damages. Read the fine print however, some companies will only reimburse you up to 10 cents per pound of your item if something is to happen. If these are precious pieces that you are shipping consider getting an outside insurance company. No matter whom is insuring your furniture, take several detailed pictures of all your pieces so you will have proof of the condition if something were to happen.

If you do decide to pack your furniture yourself ask what the guidelines are for the company you are using. Traditionally, large pieces will need to be put in crates, and smaller items will need to be boxed. First and foremost, empty all drawers, closets, nooks and crannies. Make sure that there is nothing in the furniture.

Check to see if legs are removable, or if knobs screw off. Dismantle all parts of your furniture that can come off and wrap them in bubble wrap. Package all pieces to one item of furniture together so you they don’t get lost. Buy moving blankets from U Haul and wrap your furniture so it doesn’t rub or jostle around causing damage.

For your small items, if you choose to double box items, allow an inch or two between each box. Fed Ex and UPS will ship smaller items that but each have a specific set of guidelines for height and weight so be sure to ask what they are. Again, make sure that you verify what they cover under their insurance guidelines.

If you are having a professional company ship your furniture, realize that flat shipping costs only deliver your items to your curb. You have to request White Glove Service if you would like the movers to put the items in your house, unpack and dispose of boxing and packaging. Expect to be a substantial amount more for these services.
