Tips for Frizzy Hair

Frizzy hair is the bane of hairdos and good hair days for women all over. Taming frizzy hair can be especially tricky and many women constantly seek out ways to get rid of frizzy hair. Here’s a guide on basic frizzy hair solutions.

How to Tame Frizzy Hair

There are a variety of hair products on the market today that promise to treat and tame frizzy hair. However, in order to stop frizzy hair, you’ve got to start at the root of the problem.

In most cases, frizzy hair occurs in damaged hair but it can also occur in healthy hair (often referred to as “virgin” hair.) Damage to hair can occur a variety of ways: overuse of hair ties, curling irons, blow dryers, straightening irons, overexposure to sun or wind and so forth. Overall, frizzy hair is often due to dry hair caused by damage and over-processing using dyes, perms, peroxides and heat styling.

Frizzy Hair Treatment – How to Stop Frizzy Hair

If you’re seeking out the help of hair products, be sure to avoid products that contain alcohol. Alcohol can strip hair of it’s natural moisture and make frizzy hair worse. Also avoid shampooing on a daily basis and switch to an every-other-day schedule to avoid stripping your hair of it’s natural oils. These natural oils can help prevent frizz and flyaway hair.

Tips and Tricks for Maintaining Smooth Hair

There are several basic tricks for maintaining smooth, healthier looking hair that’s frizz-free.

First, do not rub hair dry with a towel. Instead, squeeze excess water from the hair and allow to air-dry whenever possible.

Do not blow dry hair unless absolutely necessary. If you need to blow dry your hair, be sure to invest in a high quality dryer with a diffuser. A diffuser restricts air flow and reduces damage to the hair. For ultimate smooth hair, finish with cool air blow onto the hair to close the cuticle and prevent moisture from being absorbed. Also, be sure to blow downward to help avoid creating flyaway hair.

Avoid using heat stylers such as curling irons or hair straighteners. If you absolutely must use one of the above, be sure to use products that protect hair from damage. Also avoid the elements such as sun and wind, wear a hair or purchase products with SPF to protect your hair when outdoors.
Always rinse your hair out with the coldest water you can possibly handle. Hot water dries hair out, but cool water helps hair retain it’s moisture.

Get a trim every two months, at a bare minimum. Split ends will only contribute to frizzy hair. Also, resist the urge to further process your hair in any way. This means avoiding perms, straightening treatments, hair coloring or bleaching and so forth. It may be difficult to deal with roots but your hair will be healthier and you’ll be happier.

Hair grows at a rate of approximately half an inch per month – approximately six inches per year. If you absolutely must color your hair, seek a professional and have your hair colored as close to your roots as possible. Allow your hair to grow out and get regular trims to remove any damaged, over-processed hair. Deep condition often.

Home Remedies for Frizzy Hair

If you’re planning to remedy your hair at home, you’ll need to restore the pH balance of your hair. You can do this using an acidic rinse which helps close the cuticles of the hair and prevent moisture from being absorbed (and thus causing frizzy hair.) Combine one ounce of lemon, vinegar (apple cider vinegar works also) with one quart of water. Rinse hair thoroughly to remove buildup and re-rinse hair with cool water to seal the deal.

Overall, repairing damaged, frizzy hair takes time and patience.
