Tips for Cleaning Rain Gutters

As fall approaches the leaves start to turn color and will fall ofg, causing many of us to venture outside to clean our gutters out. If you do not have a gutter guard then you will most likely be hiring a gutter cleaning professional or you can do it yourself. Cleaning gutters can be very dangerous and time consuming; this article will take a look at how to clean gutters safely and efficiently.

1. Ladder safety

Placing a ladder against a gutter system is very dangerous as it can easily slip and fall. You can purchase rubber grips at most local hardware stores for under $20, but the price and grip will depend on what ladder you have. The grips will ensure that the ladder does not slide as easily and will reduce the risk of falling.

2. Gloves

When removing the leaves from the gutter you will want to wear a pair of work gloves to protect your hand from other debris and sharp corners. The gloves are very important as you do not want to have an accident while on a ladder high up.

3. Safety glasses

Sticks also get caught in the gutter and can poke you very easily while working on a ladder. Safety glasses not only protect your eyes but will also prevent you from getting disoriented and falling if you get whipped with a stick.

4. Using your hands

You can use your hands to remove the leaves; however this method is time consuming but requires no additional tools. Once you pick up the leaves you can either toss them down and rake them up after or place them in a plastic bag that can be attached to the ladder.

5. Use a water hose

Using a hose is my favorite method for removing leaves from a gutter since it’s not only easy but somewhat fun. All you need to do is turn up the water pressure on the spout and get an attachment that can concentrate the water and then you just spray it on the leaves to forcefully move them. Make sure the gutter system can handle the pressure before continuing this method.

6. Gutter brushes

Most hardware stores sell protects known as gutter brushes that are simple hand tools that help remove the debris instead of using your hands.

7. Shoes

Make sure you have some sturdy work shoes that have good grips for working on a ladder. I would recommend either work books or any shoes that you feel comfortable working in and are also sturdy.

8. Have a spotter

Not only should you have someone spot you while you clean the gutters to make sure that the ladder stays stable, but they can also look out for power lines, which are a major hazard for working on a ladder.

9. Hire a professional

If the project seems too dangerous or time consuming then try hiring a professional to do the job. The person you hire should have insurance and make sure you have in writing an agreement that you are not liable for any injury.

10. Extension pole

Another method that I prefer is to use an extension pole to easily remove leaves from the gutter system; this not only prevents dangerous leaning but it also makes it so you don’t have to move the ladder every few minutes.
