The Top War Movies to Watch in Honor of Veteran’s Day

The United States celebrated their troops on Veterans Day and remembered all the soldiers and servicemen who gave their lives while fighting for the freedom of their country. Following the special day to celebrate our national heroes, here are some of the top war movies to watch in honor of the military.

“MASH” – Robert Altman created a movie that showed war is hell while also showing that humor might be the only way to make it through sane. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould starred in “MASH” as a pair of Army surgical doctors during the Korean War. The movie was adapted into a television series than ran for 11 years.

“Apocalypse Now” – Francis Ford Coppola had a nervous breakdown while making “Apocalypse Now,” a movie that shows what war can do to a person’s psyche. Martin Sheen stars as a military soldier sent to find and eliminate a rogue military Colonel. Marlon Brando stars as the renegade military colonel in this movie, which received an Academy Award nomination.

“The Deer Hunter” – One of the most successful war movies of all time, Michael Cimino directed “The Deer Hunter,” a film which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture. In the film, a group of friends head to Vietnam and none of them come back the same. Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken stars in the movie that includes the iconic Russian roulette scene at the finale.

“Saving Private Ryan”Steven Spielberg created the ensemble war movie “Saving Private Ryan,” about a group of American troops in World War II who was sent in to save a soldier left behind. Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Edward Burns star in the all-star cast that won Spielberg an Oscar for Best Director. The film includes one of the best battle scenes ever filmed.

“Three Kings” – George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube starred in “Three Kings,” a movie taking place during the war in Iraq. The three come across some of the gold belonging to Saddam Hussein and come across innocents who need help in a time where the U.S. has promised to pull out and cease their aid. David O. Russell got a nice start in Hollywood with his award winning picture.
