The Top 3 Songs on Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die”

If Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, and many of the female contestants on “The Voice” have their way the future of pop music is people making weird voices, not exactly pretty singing. After seeing Lana Del Rey perform a few times on television I could come to no other conclusion than: she sounds like a drunk deaf lady. This conclusion still holds true, somewhat, on her album “Born To Die,” however there is a lot of slick production value fixing much of her warble and the end product is not so harsh on the ears. In fact, Lana Del Rey should be sure to ignore the haters like me and keep on keeping on, because after listening to the album: I get it.

Lyrically, the songs on “Born to Die” have a lot have cool qualities, even if her style of singing is not my cup of tea. Here are my picks for the top three songs off of the album.

3. “Blue Jeans”: Lana Del Rey pulls some of her weird voices in the singing on this jingle-jangle, moody, pop, blues ballad thing, however, it works. The flow of the song gives you some haunting echo and I could see this as a background track during a scene in a movie.

2. “Video Games”: This ballad seems to have become Lana Del Rey’s signature song and it works perfect as a showcase of what the album contains. I am not a fan of most of her singing, but the lyrics and storytelling are a guilty pleasure to dip into your ears.

1. “Off To The Races”: It balances the line between abnormal and cool, successfully remaining cool enough to make me think Lana Del Rey should actually try being some sort of weird rapper instead of trying to be a moody pop blues singer. There are some theatrical vocal choices that are pitch perfect in the right spots, taking this song to a another level of fun over the other tracks of the album.

The Lana Del Rey album “Born To Die” is a mixed bag of weirdness, but I cannot blame people for liking it. The lyrics in her songs are often interesting and the sounds match up enough times to make it a worthy addition to someone’s collection; if not just a nice source for poaching a few tracks for downloading. I here-by dub her genre of music Kooky Pop.
